HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth women's lacrosse players Kat Collins (Darien, Conn.) and Kristen Giovanniello (Old Brookville, N.Y.) have been named the Ivy League Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for their efforts in wins over Oregon and Columbia.
These mark the first Ivy weekly honors of the season for #18 Dartmouth, which improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in Ivy play with a 12-10 win over Oregon on March 23 and a convincing 15-7 victory at Columbia on March 26.
Collins, a senior attack, was dominant for the Big Green, simply overpowering her opponents en route to a 14-point week with 10 goals and four assists, scoring her 100th career goal in the process. Collins did more than score, however, also adding five ground balls, five caused turnovers and five draw controls as she filled the statsheet. Against Oregon, Collins matched her career-high with six goals and tallied eight points total, a career-best. She scored four goals in the first six minutes, including her career 100th. In the win at Columbia, Collins put forth a well-rounded effort, tallying four goals and two assists along with four caused turnovers and five valuable draw controls.
A freshman goalie, Giovanniello continued her solid play in cage this week, posting an 8.50 goals against average for the week and a highly impressive .553 save percentage. The rookie made 21 saves to just 17 goals allowed, including five stops against free position shots. She also grabbed two ground balls in each game, four total. Giovanniello made 13 saves against Oregon midweek and followed that up with an eight-save performance at Columbia, holding the Lions to just seven goals. She currently boasts the Ivy's top save percentage at .528 for the season, with an average of 9.6 saves per game, second in the conference. Giovanniello has recorded double-digit saves three times this season, including her 13 stops against the Ducks.
Dartmouth has a busy weekend on tap, hosting Ivy foe Brown this coming Saturday, April 2 at 4 p.m. before welcoming non-conference rival Syracuse on Monday, April 4 at 3 p.m.
