HANOVER, N.H. - Five members of the 2011 Ivy Champion Dartmouth women's lacrosse team have been named to the IWLCA All-Northeast Region teams.
Seniors Kat Collins (Darien, Conn.) and Shannie MacKenzie (Riverside, Conn.) and freshman Kristen Giovanniello (Old Brookville, N.Y.) were named to the All-Northeast first team. Junior Sarah Plumb (Wellesley, Mass.) and sophomore Kelsey Johnson (Hingham, Mass.) earned second team honors.
A total of 34 student-athletes were named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association's All-Northeast first and second teams, with 136 total honored across the four regions. Members of the first team are now eligible for All-America status.
Collins, a senior attack, capped off her tremendous Dartmouth career earning Ivy League Player of the Year and unanimous first team All-Ivy honors this spring, along with first team All-Ivy accolades. She was Dartmouth's second-leading scorer this year with 43 points on 33 goals and 10 assists along with impressive numbers for draw controls with 26, ground balls with 19 and caused turnovers with 13. She graduates with 163 career points, which ranks ninth all-time, 124 goals (ninth all-time) and 39 assists.
MacKenzie, a senior defender, is one of just four defenders on the All-Northeast first team, after turning in a dominant senior season. Also a first team All-Ivy honoree, MacKenzie led Dartmouth to the nation's seventh ranked scoring defense this spring (8.39 GAA). She tallied 28 ground balls along with a team-high 23 caused turnovers, while consistently guarding the opposition's strongest attacker. MacKenzie finished her Dartmouth career having never missed a game, with 63 consecutive starts in 64 appearances and 115 ground balls.
Giovanniello, a freshman, is the only goalkeeper to make the All-Northeast first team and is one of just four freshmen honored in the region. She is the only freshman goalkeeper in the nation to be recognized. Giovanniello was the unanimous choice for Ivy Rookie of the Year and a first team selection after boasting a .505 save percentage, which ended the season ranked fourth nationally. She led the nation in that category for much of the season. Giovanniello finished the year with an 8.39 goals against average, making 138 saves and grabbing a team-high 38 ground balls.
Johnson, a sophomore defender, joins MacKenzie as one of only eight defenders honored on either of the All-Northeast teams. Dartmouth is the lone school to have two defenders recognized in the region. Johnson earned All-Northeast second team and All-Ivy second team honors after a solid sophomore season. She started every game and contributed 33 ground balls, which ranked second on the team, 11 caused turnovers, 16 draw controls and two points.
Plumb earns All-Northeast second team honors for the second consecutive season, after an impressive junior year in which she was also named first team All-Ivy. One of the most versatile midfielders in the nation, Plumb ranks in the top three in every single statistical category on Dartmouth's team. Her 35 points this season ranked third, along with 22 goals and 14 assists which ranked second. She also amassed a team-high 31 draw controls to go with 28 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers.
Dartmouth finished the 2011 season with an 11-5 record, winning a share of the Ivy League Championship for the first time since 2005 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006.
