EVANSTON, Ill. - Senior Sarah Plumb (Wellesley, Mass.) of the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team has received the first national honor of the season for the Big Green as she has been named the WomensLax.com Player of the Week.
The award was given based on her efforts against No. 3 Duke where she scored the game-winning goal in a sudden-victory second overtime period.
However, Plumb's play against both Vermont and Duke was a huge reason the Big Green were able to go 2-0 on the week.
She had a goal and an assist against the Catamounts, but her four draw controls were a major reason for the team's offensive success that resulted in 13 goals. Those four draw controls on Wednesday moved her into fourth all-time at Dartmouth and, coupled with two more against the Blue Devils, has her at 98 for her career, just two short of reaching the century mark.
Undoubtedly though, her biggest contribution to the team over the two games was her goal in a sudden-victory situation against third-ranked Duke on Saturday afternoon. Plumb's goal in the second overtime period helped Dartmouth to its second win over a top-5 team in overtime at home in the last two years after the Big Green upset No. 1 Maryland in the 2011 regular season finale.
Plumb finished the day with four points on two goals and two assists to lead all players in the game. Her first goal of the afternoon came with just two seconds remaining in the half right off a draw control where she collected the ball at midfield, sprinted toward the net and beat Duke goalkeeper Mollie Mackler up top to give the home team a 6-3 advantage at the break.
Her caused turnover on Duke's final possession of the first OT session also ended any threat the Blue Devils would have as she knocked down a centering feed in front of her own net with just 12 seconds remaining.
Fellow senior Sarah Parks (Ellicott City, Md.) was named the WomensLax.com Player of the Week last season (May 2) after she scored the OT winner against the Terrapins.
Already on the Tewaarton Watch List as one of the top players to watch in the nation in 2012, Plumb ranks near or at the top of every major statistical category in the Ivy League this season.
Dartmouth returns to action Tuesday in Gainesville against No. 5/6 Florida at 6:30 p.m.
