WORCESTER, Mass. - The Dartmouth men's lightweight crew team had an outstanding regatta at the 2012 EARC Sprints on Sunday (May 13) in Worcester, Mass., on Lake Quinsigamond.
As expected, the first varsity eight grand final provided the most excitement for the Big Green over the course of the day. The Big Green took second place in the marquee race with a time of 6:24.69, just 2.18 seconds behind the top-ranked Harvard crew. The Crimson won the race with a time of 6:22.51.
Dartmouth was looking to avenge a loss to the Crimson earlier in the season. The Crimson crew has been the only crew to defeat the Big Green's top boat this season.
The Big Green's second varsity eight and freshman eight also raced in the grand finals. The second varsity eight placed sixth with a time of 6:24.30, four seconds off of the fifth place crew from Princeton. The first freshman crew also placed sixth with a time of 6:39.79.
Dartmouth's third varsity four also posted a top-five finish, taking fourth place with at time of 6:50.08 while the second freshman eight took fifth with a time of 6:58.67. Both of these events went straight to finals with no morning heats.
The Big Green opened the 2012 EARC Sprints with very strong racing in the morning heats sending each of its five boats to the afternoons grand finals.
Highlighting the morning heats was the first place finish of the first varsity eight. The Big Green crew won its heat with a time of 6:12.50, four seconds ahead of its nearest competitor, Cornell, who took second with a time of 6:16.03. Top-ranked Harvard won the other heat with a time of 6:04.54, the fastest time of the morning.
The Big Green's second varsity eight took third in its heat with a time of 6:10.52, just behind the Princeton crew, which took second place with a time of 6:09.44.
The first freshman eight also took third place with a time of 6:09.64, the fifth fastest time of the morning. The third varsity eight and the second freshman events went straight to afternoon finals.
The Big Green will see if they have done enough to earn a bid to the 2012 IRA National Championships held May 31-June 2 in Camden, N.J.
