ITHACA, N.Y. – The Dartmouth defense surrendered just three shots on goal, but Cornell was able to capitalize on a chance in the 44th minute as the Big Red defeated the Big Green, 1-0. With the loss, and Harvard's 2-1 win over Columbia, the Big Green finish the season in second place.
Senior Tatiana Saunders made two saves in her final appearance on the pitch. Cornell keeper Kelsey Tierney made three saves, as the Big Green fired off a 13-8 edge in shots. The visitors also took an advantage in set pieces (4-2).
"I am Proud of the way we fought in the second half to try and tie the game and overall very proud of our season and of our senior class," said head coach Ron Rainey. "The end of seasons are always bittersweet, but we will look back and see some incredible moments as a group and looking forward to the future."
Dartmouth (7-5-4; 3-1-3 Ivy) registered the first two shots on the game. In the ninth minute, junior Jackie Friedman was stopped by Tierney, and then classmate Lucielle Kozlov shot wide. In the 16th Minute, Cornell (8-9; 2-5 Ivy) moved the ball into the offensive zone, but Kerry Schubert's shot was directed into the hands of Saunders.
In the final 10 minutes of the first frame, Cornell had three consecutive shots fired towards the Big Green keeper. Elizabeth Crowell's pair sailed wide, while the final attempt found the back of the net for the lone goal of the contest. With 1:28 remaining in the half, Tess Paulino played the ball back to Brenna Mockler who sent a 20-yard shot into the far corner of the net to give the host a 1-0 lead.
Heading out of the break, Friedman and Kozlov each had a chance to tie the score, but Tierney made a save on Kozlov's attempt. Dartmouth finished the second half with 10 shots, as Friedman made a last-ditch effort to try and score with less than two minutes remaining, but Tierney held the post to secure the win.
Dartmouth is set to return 19 players next season, while seniors Kate Castillo, Kendall Kraus, Tatiana Saunders, Laura Thurber and Tasha Wilkins will move on and graduate in the spring.
