PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A header by senior Jill Dayneka with 18 seconds remaining in regulation tied the score at one and, following two scoreless overtime periods, resulted in a draw between the Dartmouth women's soccer team and Penn on the road Saturday evening.
The Big Green are now 7-3-3 on the season and 0-2-2 in Ivy League play, while the Quakers have a record of 5-3-5 and 0-1-3 in conference action.
"With all the power outages, it was a little bit of a disjointed game," head coach Ron Rainey said. "But I think that allowed us to regroup and dedicate ourselves to attacking and playing a little cleaner. It was very cool to score that late goal and try to get the game-winner in overtime. I am really proud of our group and how hard we fought. We want to start the game against Columbia next weekend how we finished this game tonight.
"Today was a very nice team effort," Rainey continued. "We played well defensively when Penn put us under pressure. Everyone played a roll. We went into a different formation, something we don't normally train, and the players really responded. We want to have a great week of practice and get some recovery. We have had some nice results this season, and now we want to get those results from Ivy League teams. We're looking forward to practice and Columbia."
A tough defensive battle in the first half kept the ball away from the goalkeepers, resulting in just 10 shots, three of which had to be saved by the goalkeepers.
At 52:26, Olivia Blaber broke the tie with her shot from 30 yards out, burying the ball in the upper far corner. It appeared that the home team would walk away with the win but, at 89:42, a free kick by senior Jackie Friedman found Dayneka, who headed the ball past Carrie Crook in net to send the game to overtime.
Following two power outages in the second half that postponed the completion of the game, the Quakers controlled the action in the first overtime period, taking two shots and one corner kick to the Big Green's zero. In the second 10-minute period, Penn took one shot while sophomore Brittany Champagne had two corner kicks to end the game.
Penn outshot Dartmouth, 12-9, but the Green had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Junior Casey Cousineau ended up with four saves, while Crook stopped two shots.
Just three more games remain in the regular season. Next Saturday, Oct. 24, the Green will host Columbia at 4:30 p.m.
