HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's soccer team fell, 2-1, to Columbia on Saturday at Burnham Field.
With the loss, the Big Green are now 7-4-3 overall and 0-3-2 in the Ivy League. The Lions improve to 6-7-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play.
Columbia jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Elly McGuffog after a Lions' corner kick. Dartmouth continued to apply pressure on Columbia netminder Allison Spencer, who finished the game with eight saves.
The Lions added to their lead around the 27-minute mark when Emma Anderson scored her fifth goal of the season on a breakaway. Big Green goaltender Casey Cousineau reached up and got a piece of the ball, but could not make the save. She finished the evening with two saves on 19 shots.
After the second Lions goal, Dartmouth dictated play for the reminder of the half. Senior Jackie Friedman fired off a shot with less than 20 seconds, but could not find the back of the net.
“I'm really proud of how we battled and fought back in the second half, but we have to start games better,” head coach Ron Rainey said. “We outshot them, 11-0, in the second half, 5-1 in corners and created some nice chances. We need to start games with that passion, intensity and fire and that's what this week of practice will be for us.”
After halftime, Dartmouth continued to pressure Columbia's net. At 78:01, the Green persistence paid off, when Lucielle Kozlov netted her 10th goal of the season, assisted by Friedman.
“I thought it was a great goal,” Rainey continued. “It was nice that we were rewarded for some of the pressure and maybe unlucky that we weren't able to get a couple more chances to try to tie it up.”
The Big Green continued to put shots on the Lions' net, but they could not find the equalizer despite their success in the second half of games this season.
Dartmouth returns to action on Oct. 31 when it travels to Harvard. The Big Green will be at home on Nov. 7 to take on Cornell for the regular season finale.
