NEW YORK — Senior Milica Toskovic snapped a three-game scoring drought with the game-winning basket with 1:58 remaining in overtime to propel the Dartmouth women's basketball team over Columbia, 61-54, on Saturday evening at Levien Gym.
Dartmouth (11-11, 2-6 Ivy) also snapped a six-game losing streak with the win over the Lions. Sophomore Fanni Szabo led all scorers with 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds along with three steals.
Junior Lakin Roland added 13 points and was replaced in the starting lineup today by freshman Kate Letkewicz who pulled down five rebounds in the winning effort. Senior Tia Dawson also made the start tonight and finished with nine points and nine rebounds.
Dartmouth shot 31 percent from the floor and added 19 points from the line for an 86.4 percentage. The Big Green outrebounded Columbia, 49-42 and collected 15 on the offensive end.
Columbia's Tori Oliver had 22 points but fouled out midway through the overtime period and had six turnovers. She was the only player for Columbia that scored in double figures. The Lions shot 34 percent from the floor and had a lackluster performance from the line and shot 8-of-17.
Columbia's Camille Zimmerman tied the contest at 47-all with 2:38 left in regulation before Szabo and Oliver added baskets on both ends. Dartmouth had a chance to end the game with a last possession shot, but a travel was called on Szabo. Oliver then raced down the court and hit a basket as the buzzer expired.
After video review, it was concluded that Oliver had the ball still in her hands after the light came on.
In overtime, both sides traded jumpers but a five-footer by Toskovic was the eventual game-winner for the visitors. After the senior's basket, Dartmouth finished the game on a 6-0 run to complete the road victory.
The one-point lead for the Big Green to begin the second half saw another seesaw battle between both sides. Devon Roeper opened up the scoring for the Lions who took a lead, 23-22. Columbia enjoyed a 10-minute lead until Roland's layup was part of a 9-0 lead that gave the Big Green a 41-37 lead.
It was a sluggish first half across the board as the Big Green went into the locker room ahead, 22-21, but both sides struggled to find any offense away from the charity stripe. Both sides combined for 31 attempts from the line. Dartmouth connected on 12-of-14 from the line for 85.7 percent. Columbia struggled at the stripe and shot 7-of-15 from 46.7 percent.
Szabo gave the Big Green a 3-0 lead on the first shot of the contest before Miwa Tachibana tied the contest at five with a trey of her own. Dartmouth took its largest lead of the contest by seven (17-10) with 8:23 on a jumper by Dawson. Columbia tied the game with seven unanswered points before Dawson gave the visitors a lead once again.
Dartmouth will continue its Ivy League road swing next weekend at Princeton next Friday and Penn next Saturday.
