GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The first few minutes of Saturday's game between the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team and No. 4 Florida set the table for an apparent back-and-forth scoring affair.
In the end, however, the Gators' potent offense was too much to overcome as the Big Green fell on the road at Dizney Stadium, 18-10.
After the teams exchanged the first four goals of the contest, Florida (4-1) went on an 11-1 run to end the first half with a 13-3 lead. Although trailing by double figures heading in the second, Dartmouth (0-2) was determined to hang with the home team, outscoring them 7-5 in the period.
“I'm proud of the way we responded after they went on their run,” head coach Amy Patton said. “I thought we showed great discipline to stick with our game plan, which was key to our success in the second half.
“We played with great grit and toughness today,” Patton continued. “There were moments where they (Florida) could have gone up more on us, but we battled right there with them and began to really execute plays down the stretch.”
Junior Jaclyn Leto once again led her team in scoring, netting four goals in the contest and pushing her season total to 11 in just two goals.
Leto and seniors Sarah Byrne (2) and Frances Bird (2) all had multiple goals in the game and factored prominently on the draw control for the Green and White. After not registering a single draw control in the season opener against UConn, Byrne led all players in the outing with six — one short of her career high — while Leto had four and Bird three.
For the game, Dartmouth held a 17-13 advantage on the draw, but Florida controlled in both shots (25-15) and ground balls (17-9), while committing six fewer turnovers (11-6).
“They had really been dominant against us in the past few seasons in terms of draws,” Patton remarked. “When we look at the game as a whole, I will be pleased with how well we did today in that regard. It's a game of possession and this was a very good sign for us moving forward.”
Adding to Dartmouth's scoring were Danielle Lisovicz and Campbell Probert. The latter of the two scored Dartmouth's second goal of the afternoon just 3:29 into the game, while Lisovicz's marker came midway through the second period as the Green were in the midst of their best stretch of play.
Leading the way for the Gators was Shannon Gilroy, who finished the afternoon with six goals and eight points. Nora Barry also chipped in with three goals and five total points.
For the first time this season, Patton split time between her goalkeepers as senior Jessica Frieder got the start and sophomore Julia Reiley came into the game in relief for the final 13 minutes. The two made three combined saves as Frieder was saddled with the loss. For Florida, Mary-Sean Wilcox got the win as she stopped three and allowed eight before making way for Olivia Cole in the final minutes.
The Big Green will return to action on Tuesday afternoon as they head to Beantown to take on Boston University at 4 p.m. Check back with DartmouthSports.com for game information.
