SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Having to move the game inside at the last minute, the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team faced its first nationally ranked opponent on Saturday, falling to No. 2 Notre Dame, 20-5, at Arlotta Stadium.
The Big Green dipped to 0-2 on the young season, while the Fighting Irish improved to 3-0 on their 2015 campaign.
Three Dartmouth players ended the day with one point apiece, while sophomores Don Stephan and Wiley Osborne led the way with two points each. Stephan netted two goals and Osborne scored once and assisted on the Green's penultimate goal. Senior Robert Osgood led with his seven groundballs.
Junior Blair Friedensohn, who was saddled with his second loss of the season, made 12 saves and allowed 19 goals during his time between the pipes. Senior Colin Heffernan stepped in for the final quarter and allowed one marker.
After senior Adam Fishman and Stephan scored Dartmouth's first two goals (the first of which being man-up) early in the first quarter to tie things up at two, Notre Dame went on to net 14 unanswered goals that spanned the second and third quarters to give the home team a 16-2 lead.
With 8:39 remaining in the third, Osborne scored his first of the season and Dartmouth's third of the game, but that was followed a few short minutes later by two more Notre Dame tallies, sending the game into the final 15 minutes of action with a score of 18-3.
The Fighting Irish opened the fourth quarter with two quick goals before senior Jake Weil got another one on the board for Dartmouth with 9:29 left on the clock. Stephan scored his second of the game and his fourth of the season with 3:33 remaining in the game to close scoring.
Notre Dame outshot Dartmouth, 50-18 and had a 36-27 advantage in groundballs.
The Green will open their six-game home schedule on Wednesday, March 4, when they host Sacred Heart in a non-conference tilt set to start at 3 p.m. on Scully-Fahey Field.
