HANOVER, N.H. – On a 40 degree March afternoon, the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team opened its six-game home schedule by dropping a 10-9 heartbreaker to Sacred Heart on Scully-Fahey Field on Wednesday.
The Big Green dipped to 0-3 on the season, while the Pioneers won their first game of the year and improved to 1-1.
After junior Jack Connolly tied the score at nine with 23 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Sacred Heart got possession of the ball and, a split second before time expired, Ian Farley scored the game-winner to give the Pioneers their first victory of 2015.
Freshman Jack Korzelius had a big day, scoring his first collegiate goal early in the first and tacking on three more throughout the remainder of the game to lead the team with four. Eight other Big Green players ended the day with one point apiece.
Junior Blair Friedensohn saw all 60 minutes of action between the pipes, making 13 saves, including a handful of key stops to keep the visitors at bay. He also led the team with seven groundballs.
After a scoreless five-minute start to the game, Sacred Heart scored twice in less than a minute to take a 2-0 lead with 9:16 remaining in the quarter. Freshman Evan Key scored his first collegiate goal with 8:38 to play to lessen the Pioneers' edge to one and, after another Pioneer goal, Korzelius got his first of the game with 1:03 left on the clock.
Friedensohn had a handful of saves to start the second to prevent the visitors from scoring, keeping the score at 3-2 in Sacred Heart's favor. With 9:37 remaining, Korzelius received a pass from sophomore Don Stephan and scored his second of the game, only to have the Pioneers take back the lead with their fourth of the game a minute later, a marker netted by leading goal scorer Bryce Jurk. Another tally by Korzelius and one apiece by senior Patrick Campbell and sophomore Wiley Osborne with nine ticks left on the clock gave Dartmouth a 7-6 lead heading into halftime.
The Pioneers opened the third with two Julian Garritano goals scored 13 seconds apart to give an 8-7 edge to the visitors with 9:43 left in the quarter. After nine minutes of scoreless play, Korzelius sent an unassisted rocket from the left with 33 seconds to play to tie the score at eight heading into the final quarter.
With 15 minutes remaining in a game locked at eight, both teams returned to the field for the fourth quarter with even more aggression than before. A key save by Friedensohn with 10:32 left on the clock prevented the Pioneers from finding the back of the net but, in response, Jon Flood had a good stop with 9:01 remaining, keeping the fourth scoreless.
With the clock at 6:07, Brian Masi gave Sacred Heart the goal it was looking for, giving the Pioneers a 9-8 lead with time quickly winding down. With just 23 ticks remaining, Connolly netted his first of the season to tie the score at nine but, with less than 10 seconds left on the clock, Farley received the ball and found the back of the net just in the nick of time.
While the visitor outshot Dartmouth, 41-29, the home team had a 23-22 advantage in groundballs. The Big Green went 1-for-3 on extra-man opportunities and held the Pioneers to 0-for-6.
Dartmouth will be on the road on Saturday, March 7 for a 1 p.m. non-conference tilt against Wagner.
