STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, defeating Wagner, 11-10, at Hameline Field. The Big Green improved to 1-3 on the season, while the Seahawks dipped to 1-4.
First-year head coach Brendan Callahan also earned his first win at the helm of the Big Green program.
For the second game in a row, freshman Jack Korzelius had a huge performance, netting four of the Green's 11 goals to lead both teams. Sophomore Wiley Osborne and junior KC Beard each had a goal and two assists for three points. Senior Phil Hession broke his own single-game record with his 12 groundballs, a mark that had held for two seasons.
Senior Colin Heffernan and junior Blair Friedensohn each spent 30 minutes between the pipes, with Heffernan winning his first game of the season. Friedensohn made all six saves.
The home team got on the board first with a Paul DeVita marker 50 seconds into the game, but Dartmouth followed that up less than a minute later when Beard netted his first of the season with 13:17 to play. The Seahawks then went on to score three unanswered goals and kept the Big Green with just one point until junior Cam Lee scored a man-up tally with 3:46 remaining in the first quarter.
With a 5-2 advantage, Wagner scored its sixth goal with 13:09 left in the second, but Dartmouth started to close the gap with three consecutive goals. Korzelius tacked on two marks three minutes apart, while senior Patrick Campbell scored the last tally of the second quarter with 3:01 to play. The game headed to halftime with the Seahawks slightly leading, 6-5.
Korzelius tied the score at six with 12:39 remaining in the third quarter, but leading point-scorer Andrew Streilein broke the tie by netting two goals to give the Seahawks a two-goal edge with four and a half minutes to go. With 1:02 remaining, Korzelius got his fourth of the day following a pass from Osborne to lessen the gap to one.
Another goal by Beard with 12:38 to play in the fourth quarter tied the score at eight, while markers by junior Billy Heidt and senior Jake Weil a minute apart gave Dartmouth its first lead of the game, a 10-8 edge with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth. Goals by Billy Orme and JP Pawela tied the score at 10 with just eight minutes left to play.
After assisting on two goals, Osborne got one of his own with 4:53 remaining, scoring the eventual game-winner to give Dartmouth an 11-10 lead that would hold until the final horn.
The two teams were evenly matched, with both of them taking 29 shots on goal. The Big Green went 1-for-3 with the extra man, while the Seahawks went 2-for-5. Dartmouth picked up 21 groundballs compared to Wagner's 16 and the visitors won a season-high 14 faceoffs, while the Seahawks won 11-of-25.
Dartmouth will open Ivy League play on Saturday, March 21 when it hosts Harvard at 1 p.m.
