HANOVER, N.H. – A goal by freshman Jack Korzelius with 2:21 remaining in the second overtime period lifted the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team over No. 15/16 Harvard, 12-11, at Scully-Fahey Field on Saturday afternoon. This is the third consecutive Green game that has come down to one point.
The Big Green improved to 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in Ivy League play, while the Crimson dipped to 4-4 and 0-2 in conference action. The last time Dartmouth defeated Harvard was a 9-8 victory on March 26, 2011.
Senior Adam Fishman led Dartmouth with four goals, while junior Cam Lee had two markers and one assist and sophomore Wiley Osborne scored one goal and tallied two helpers. Senior Phil Hession led with 15 ground balls and went 20-for-24 on the face-off.
Penalties worked in favor of the home team in the early stages of the game, as the Big Green's first and third goals were scored with the extra player. After markers by Osborne and Hession six seconds apart and another by Fishman 30 seconds later, Dartmouth sat comfortably ahead of Harvard with 12:42 remaining in the period.
Junior Blair Friedensohn worked hard to keep the Crimson at bay, making five saves until Ian Ardrey finally put the visitors on the board with 3:34 to go.
It was not until six minutes into the second that another goal was scored, a Joe Lang tally that allowed the Crimson to get within one of the Green, but a fancy backhand with 8:15 left and another rocket with 6:16 to go, both by Fishman, gave Dartmouth a 5-2 edge. The first half was closed with one more Harvard goal scored by Deke Burns with 4:31 left, and the game entered intermission with Dartmouth leading 5-3.
A goal by Ardrey with 12:03 left to play in the third got the Crimson back within one, while a fake out behind the net by Devin Dwyer tied the score for the first time with 9:02 remaining in the quarter. Dartmouth went on to net three straight by Lee and fellow junior Billy Heidt and Korzelius, before allowing another Crimson goal by Sean Coleman with 3:28 left, making it an 8-6 game.
The fourth quarter was an eventful one for both teams, who scored two goals apiece in the span of two minutes. Fishman got his second man-up of the afternoon and Hession netted his second to give the Big Green a 10-9 lead, but a goal by Sean McDonagh put the Crimson within one with 6:57 to play.
Any time Dartmouth started to pull ahead, like with Lee's goal with 3:42 to play, Harvard would, once again, make it a one-goal game. Ardrey made it an 11-10 contest with 2:44 remaining in the game and, with just 14 seconds to go, his fifth of the day tied the score at 11 and sent it to overtime, the first of the year for Dartmouth.
A key save by Harvard's Bryan Moore with a split second left in the first overtime period kept Dartmouth from getting that pivotal 12th goal. With 2:21 left in the second overtime period, leading goal scorer Korzelius netted his 10th of the season to end the game with a victory.
The Green outshot the Crimson, 39-34. They went 22-for-27 on faceoffs and were 3-for-4 on extra man opportunities, while holding Harvard to 0-for-6. Friedensohn earned his first win of the season, making 12 saves in all.
Dartmouth wastes no time getting back to action, hosting non-conference Vermont at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24.
