HANOVER, N.H. – For the second contest in a row, freshman Jack Korzelius netted the game-winner, helping the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team battle through eight ties to defeat Vermont, 16-15, at Scully-Fahey Field on Tuesday.
The Big Green have won three straight games and are now 3-3 on the season, while the Catamounts fell to 3-7. This is Dartmouth's fourth consecutive game that has been decided by a single point.
Sophomore Wiley Osborne played a huge hand in the win, netting three goals and assisting on four. He currently leads the team with 16 points. Senior Adam Fishman also had a strong performance, finding the back of the net five times.
As it did against Harvard, Dartmouth struck first, getting on the board just over a minute into the game with a goal by Korzelius, but Vermont quickly took the lead after by scoring three straight. The two teams traded points back and forth until the Green went on a five-goal run following two markers by Fishman and one apiece by junior Billy Heidt, Osborne and senior Patrick Campbell to end the first quarter with a 7-5 edge.
After being held scoreless for the last six minutes of the opening quarter, the Catamounts opened the second with three consecutive tallies to give the visitors an 8-7 advantage, but after a goal by Korzelius with 10:34 remaining tied the score at eight, Dartmouth took the lead and ran with it, wrapping up the first half with an 11-9 advantage.
Vermont's Dyson White tied the score at 11 with 11:47 to go in the third and it was not until there was 5:13 left to play that another goal was scored, a Cam Milligan marker that put Vermont one ahead of Dartmouth. The Catamounts held the Big Green scoreless throughout the third, while finding the back of the net three times themselves.
Junior Taylor Topousis netted his second of the season with 12:09 to go, but with Vermont goals occurring before and after his tally, the visitors remained two ahead with a score of 14-12 with 10:36 to play.
From there, things got interesting. Junior Jack Connolly tied the score at 14, while Osborne put the home team one goal ahead with 5:38 to play. Vermont found the back of the net a minute later, but Korzelius scored with 3:24 left to give Dartmouth a 16-15 lead, an edge that would last until the final horn.
Dartmouth outshot Vermont, 50-44. The Green went 20-for-35 on the face-off, with senior Phil Hession going 15-for-26. Junior Blair Friedensohn earned his second win of the season, spending all 60 minutes between the pipes and making nine saves, while, on the other side of the field, Jon Kaplan made 18 stops in the losing effort.
The Big Green will hit the road for New York, facing conference rival Cornell at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 28.
