ITHACA, N.Y. – The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team had its three-game winning streak cut short with an 8-2 loss to No. 7 Cornell on Schoellkopf Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Big Green dipped to 3-4 and 1-1 in Ivy League action, while the Big Red are now 7-2 and 3-0 in conference play.
A goal by Cornell's John Edmonds 51 seconds into the opening quarter kicked things off, but defense was on point for both teams, as zero goals and a combined 12 shots were taken in the remaining 14 minutes, including ones that hit the post by junior Cam Lee and senior Jake Weil.
With 11:14 to go in the second, junior Austin Duncan found the back of the net for the first time this season to tie things up following a pass from senior Phil Hession. Another goal by Edmonds and one by Keith Andrew with 4:19 to play put the home team up by two and the Big Red went into halftime with a 3-1 lead.
Cornell doubled its goals by scoring three times within a minute and a half early in the third quarter. Two more by Connor Buczek gave the Big Red an 8-1 advantage heading into the final quarter.
With 45 seconds remaining in the game, junior Jack Connolly scored his third of the season after connecting with sophomore Wiley Osborne, netting the only goal of the fourth quarter.
The Big Red outshot the Green, 37-26. Dartmouth went 8-for-14 on the face-off and was 0-for-3 with the extra player, while holding Cornell to 1-for-3. Between the pipes, junior Blair Friedensohn made eight stops while, on the other side of the field, Christian Knight had 10 saves.
Dartmouth will face No. 11 Yale at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 4.
