DENVER – The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team made its first ever trip to Colorado this week, but will leave the Centennial State with a 13-6 defeat to Denver at Barton Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The Big Green (0-7) dropped the first all-time meeting against the Pioneers (6-2), despite an early lead and 11 saves from goalkeeper Jessica Frieder; just one shy of her career high.
Sophomore Kelly Dolan scored the first goal of her collegiate career and Jaclyn Leto netted a trio of goals in the Mile High City, but it was not enough to overcome three tallies apiece from the home team's Nicole Martindale and Monica Lucas and a balanced secondary scoring attack.
For Leto, the three markers pushed her career point total to 95, just five shy of joining the program's century scoring mark. She also continues to be the best player in the Ivy League at scoring from the 8-meter arc this year, doing so three more times on Tuesday for a season figure of 15-for-25 on the free-position attempt.
In addition to Leto and Dolan, Dartmouth got goals from both Ingrid Hermanson and Danielle Lisovicz in the game. Campbell Probert and Frances Bird each added assists in the loss with Probert's helper coming as the first of career.
The Big Green scored first in the contest and held a 3-1 advantage through the first half of the opening stanza until the Pioneers began to chip away at the deficit. An 8-2 run to close out the period sent the home team into the locker room with a 9-5 lead at intermission.
The second half was a defensive battle as the two teams combined for just five goals with Denver's players accounting for four to earn the 13-6 victory.
Pioneers' goalkeeper Hannah Hook earned the win by making nine saves and allowing just the six goals.
The final result is a misleading indicator of how close this game was. Outside of a 30-16 advantage in total shots for the home team, many of the statistics were relatively even. The Pios held an 11-10 edge in draw controls, while both managed to collect 23 ground balls and were whistled for 25 fouls apiece.
The Big Green return home for the start of a three-game homestand on Saturday when they play host to Southern California at Scully-Fahey Field at 1 p.m. USC features a familiar face on the sidelines as former Dartmouth All-American goalkeeper Devon Wills '06 is in her third season as an assistant coach for the Trojans.
