vs Dartmouth Invite #1
Dartmouth College

Day One

9/19/2015 10:05:00 AM | Men's Tennis
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Dartmouth men's tennis team opened the fall at Princeton's Ivy Plus Tournament on Friday. The Big Green won two of their doubles matches and 10 singles matches.
“The toughness and resiliency that are becoming hallmarks of our program were evident once again today,” head coach Chris Drake said. “Going undefeated (7-0) in three-set matches is proof of our willingness to fight and compete at a high level. I thought our presence on the court was very strong today.”
Pairing up for the first time, junior Diego Pedraza and freshman Joey Haig had an 8-4 victory over the host's Jonathan Carcione and Alexander Day. Also picking up a doubles' victory were sophomore Paul Midgley and freshman Eddie Grabill, who had a 8-6 win over Indiana's Matthew McCoy and Elliott Yee.
Pedraza, Midgley and sophomore Ciro Riccardi each picked up two singles victories throughout the day. Against Tulsa's Juan Matias Gonzalez, Riccardi won the first and third sets by scores of 6-3, while falling in the second by the same score. Later on in the day, he defeated the tournament's No. 1 seed Nick Bybel of Bucknell, 6-1, 6-2. Bybel is currently No. 95 in the ITA National Rankings.
Pedraza fell in his first set to Penn's Vim De Alwis, 4-6, before picking up a 6-4 win in the second and was leading the third, 3-1, when the match was retired. Against Diego Vives of Princeton, he dropped the second set, 5-7, but won the first and third, 6-4, 7-5, to take the match. Both of Midgley's victories also went to three sets. He came back from a lost first set, 3-6, against Mohamed El Tonbari of Princeton to win the following two, 6-4, 7-5, and did the same against Harvard's Kelvin Lam, falling, 2-6, to start off and turning things around to win the next two sets, 6-3, 6-4.
“As always, we will learn from today's matches and use the experience to help us reach our team goals for the season,” Drake concluded.
The Big Green return to the court on Saturday for day two-of-three of the Ivy Plus Tournament.
