HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team scored three goals in the final 8:12 to cap a furious comeback and defeat Bryant, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Chase Field.
Brooke Van Valkenburg scored the first and third markers with
Rebecca Hu netting the second as the Big Green (3-3) erased a two-goal Bulldogs' (1-7) lead and picked up their second win of the weekend.
Despite Dartmouth dominating the stats sheet, Bryant got on the board first as Victoria Danby scored in the eighth minute. The Bulldogs built the lead to a pair of goals when Danby netted another in the 47th minute.
However, that was when the Big Green's wealth of corner plays finally began to pay off. Dartmouth had earned 17 corners before one finally resulted in a goal as Valkenburg's shot from the top of the circle redirected off a stick and into the top of the net in the 62nd minute.
Hu tied things up on her team's 20th corner of the day just four and a half minutes later, blasting a shot into the low corner. Sophomore
Anna Ewasechko picked up her second assist of the afternoon after she and
Eliza Becker were credited with helpers on the first Dartmouth goal.
Just 52 seconds after the Hu equalizer, Van Valkenburg and Becker connected again on a give-and-go play in the circle with the former blasting the eventual game winner into the back of the net. The play began with another penalty corner for the home team as their pressure throughout the contest was too much for the Bulldogs to slow down, resulting in the 22-4 advantage overall and a 15-4 edge in the second half alone.
The offensive pressure that eventually resulted in the victory produced a 29-12 discrepancy in shot attempts favoring the Big Green.
Junior goalkeeper
Paige Duffy picked up her third win of the season and of her career by making four saves in the game. At the other end of the field, Marrisa Elizardo was less than 10 minutes from a shutout victory, but was dealt the loss while turning aside 10 shots.
Both Becker and Ewasechko finished the day with a pair of assists with Hu notching her second goal in as many games and Van Valkenburg capping her six-point weekend with two big tallies. Van Valkenburg had 14 total shot attempts in Sunday's win.
The Big Green are back in action on Sunday, Sept. 27 at home when they play host to Princeton in the 2015 Ivy League opener.
