HANOVER, N.H. – After recording its second historic victory of the season against Princeton, the seventh ranked Dartmouth men's squash team lost its first Ivy League match of the season to No. 2 Penn 5-4.
The loss drops the Big Green to 5-2, while the Quakers improve to 7-1.
Freshman Sam Epley lost a hard fought match in four games. Epley had some chances early but could not put away his opponent.
Meanwhile senior Kyle Martino's match went the distance before he eventually defeated his Penn opponent. After winning the first game, Martino lost the next two. Down 2-1, Martino rallied to take the fourth game before winning the final frame by winning the last three points of the match.
In the second round of matches, freshman Carson Spahr and senior James Fisch put away their opponents in four games after each player dropped the second game of the match. Junior Nick Harrington fought hard, but eventually fell to his opponent.
After two rounds of matches, Dartmouth and Penn were tied 3-3, meaning the final round would be winner take all.
Sophomore Alvin Heumann got the Big Green off to a great start winning three straight one-sided games. Meanwhile freshman Matthew Giegerich and junior Glen Brickman had a chance to win the match for Dartmouth.
Brickman fell 3-1 to his opponent after taking the second game. With the overall match score tied 4-4, it all came down to Giegerich.
Facing a very talented opponent, Giegerich couldn't impose his game, falling 3-0 to give Penn the 5-4 victory.
The Big Green return to the court on Saturday Jan. 16 to host Drexel.
