Leading up to the 2016-17 season, DartmouthSports.com will be taking a closer look at the 11-member Class of 2020 making their Big Green debut this fall.
Another in the long line of Toronto recruits, Jamie McLaughlin started last season with the Orangeville Flyers before being traded to the Burlington Cougars. Between the two Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) teams, he played in 50 regular season games and 18 playoff contests where he registered 51 points. Prior to this year as a rookie playing for the Flyers, he amassed 33 points in 46 regular season tilts. A product of the Toronto Marlboros Hockey Association, Jamie can play any of the forward positions.
What made you pick Dartmouth?
Playing hockey for the Big Green fit what I was looking for in a program both athletically and academically. On top of this, I heard great things about the program and their history of recruiting Canadians.
What are some other sports you played growing up and how did that helping you in hockey?
Growing up, I competed in Sailing. I learned a lot about patience and the mental side of sport through my time competing.
What is your favorite sports team?
My favourite sports team is the Toronto Raptors. I am a big hockey fan, but the Raptors are an exciting team to watch and are taking over the city with their buzz.
Why did you pick the position you play? Did you ever play anything else?
I decided to play centre because I like scoring goals but I am also responsible defensively. I also have spent time playing both winger positions.
Where is your favorite place that you have already visited?
My favourite place I have visited is Kenya. After seeing so many photos of these animals, it was amazing to see them up close in person. Also, the local Kenyans we met were so welcoming and kind that it was a very warm experience.
What are you planning on studying at Dartmouth?
I have yet to decide what I would like to study but I am considering Economics, Government, or possibly Environmental Studies.
Dogs or cats?
Dogs. I think they like humans a lot more than cats do.
Who was your favorite player growing up?
Growing up, my favourite player was Martin St. Louis. I don't play a similar game to St. Louis but I liked his story of being underestimated due to his size. I was a big fan boy and wore #26 for many years.
Why did you go the route of playing in college rather than some of the other options that are available for players your age?
I chose to go the college route because I always had a high priority on academics so playing college hockey seemed well suited to me. I was also a bit of a late bloomer and the college route caters to players like this as the recruiting process can occur later than in Major Junior leagues.
What do you know about the tradition of hockey at Dartmouth?
I am looking forward to participating in the tennis ball toss game vs. Princeton. This game is a unique tradition and seems like a ton of fun so I am excited to be part of it.
Any pre-game meals or rituals you have to have?
Before games, I don't have a very specific routine, but I always make sure to play some Sewerball with the boys. I also make sure to not let my fresh tape job touch the ground before I go on the ice.
If you could switch places with anyone in the world for a day, who would it be and why?
If I could switch places with one person for the day, it would be Drake. I am a huge Drake fan and love what he does for Toronto.
