HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's soccer team recorded its best offensive performance of the season thus far in a dominant 4-1 victory at Burnham Field on Saturday evening.
The Big Green are now 4-2-5 overall, 2-0-1 in the Ivy League, while the Quakers drop to 3-3-5, 1-2-0 in conference play.
Dartmouth concluded its three-game homestand with a win for the team's first trio of consecutive victories of the season after taking down UNH and Yale last week. The Big Green outshot its Ancient Eight foe from Philadelphia by a 12-5 margin in the solid outing.
“Firstly I am very proud of the team tonight, Dartmouth head coach Chad Riley said. “They showed great character and focus, Ivy League games always take your best effort and Penn is a good team and it took our best effort tonight. Overall I feel it was a mature performance and it is always the goal to match a performance with a result."
The Big Green jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when Tyler Dowse found Noah Paravicini on a long pass down the field. Paravicini worked around Penn's defense and fired a shot that rocketed past the Quaker's keeper for the early score.
Throughout the first half, each team did a solid job possessing the soccer ball, but Penn had trouble setting up scoring chances in the attacking zone. With 10 minutes to go in the first stanza, Dartmouth nearly added to its lead on a couple of quick shots, including one by Matt Danilack that deflected off the near side post.
After halftime the teams returned to the field where the Big Green would put the game out of reach for good. Just about 10 minutes into the half, Jonathan Nierenberg netted his second goal of the season to put Dartmouth ahead, 2-0. Matt Greer fed Nierenberg with a pass in the box for the Sand Point, New York native to burry to the left of the keeper.
Although Dartmouth held a two-goal advantage, the Big Green did not relent in the offensive zone. In the 60th minute, Greer and Emmanuel Arteaga got behind the Quakers defense on an odd man rush. Greer passed the ball over to the Dartmouth captain who capitalized on his shot for Arteaga's first goal of the season.
Trailing 3-0, Penn's offense felt the pressure and controlled possession for about 10 minutes in Dartmouth's end of the field. In the 71st minute, the Quakers hard work paid off when Matt Poplawski headed in a shot after a scrum in front of the net.
The Big Green settled down after the Penn goal and brought the action back into the Quakers end. In the 77th minute, Yima Asom came sprinting into the box and was taken down, resulting in a penalty shot for Dartmouth.
Wyatt Omsberg took the penalty kick for the Big Green and scored on low shot to the lower left corner of the goal for Dartmouth's fourth goal of the match.
The Big Green return to action on Tuesday for a non-conference road game at Boston University at 7 p.m.
