HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's soccer team and Penn played to a 1-1 draw in double overtime on Saturday night at Burnham Field.
With the draw, the Big Green move to 6-5-1 overall, 0-3-1 in the Ivy League, while the Quakers are now 7-3-2, 1-2-1 in conference play.
Despite being outshot on the scoreboard 16-7, Dartmouth remained focused on getting quality scoring chances, as the Big Green held a slight 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.
“I thought we played with a lot of heart and desire and we practiced that way this week,” Big Green head coach Ron Rainey said. “We get a chance to practice this week and get better before heading down to Columbia next week. I thought our courage was great to see. I think we will get better from this going forward.”
Dartmouth had its hands full in the first half with a stingy Penn defense that has only allowed seven goals prior to Saturday's contest. The Big Green's best scoring opportunity came with 25 minutes to play in the first when Gia Parker had a good look, but was called offside.
With 3:50 left in the first stanza Penn headed in a ball in the box that found the back of the net, but the Quaker's attacker knocked into Dartmouth goalkeeper, Casey Cousineau, and Penn was called offside.
After halftime the teams returned to the pitch to break the scoreless draw. In the 54th minute, the Big Green got on the scoreboard when Dartmouth was awarded a penalty kick. The Green's senior captain Holly Patterson lined up for the penalty kick firing a low shot that got past Kitty Qu for her second goal of the season.
Later in the second half the Quakers responded when Emily Sands took a shot near the top of the box. The initial shot was saved by Cousineau, but Paige Lombard was there for the rebound to tie the match.
Neither team could find the go ahead goal, which sent the game into overtime. In the first overtime period Penn had a couple of shots, but neither were on target. A scoreless 10 minutes led to the second overtime period where Dartmouth had a chance to score when Brittany Champagne was awarded a corner kick, but the Big Green could not capitalize.
“I think we had a mixture of people trying to make runs off the ball,” Rainey said. “I think we have to be a little cleaner to create a couple more chances for ourselves, but that was a hard fought game and maybe it deserved to end in a tie. Both teams worked very hard and I'm proud we were apart of it tonight.”
Dartmouth returns to action next Saturday when the Big Green travel to Columbia at 4 p.m. The game can be seen live on the Ivy League Digital Network for subscribers.
