Leading up to the 2016-17 season, DartmouthSports.com will be taking a closer look at the 11-member Class of 2020 making their Big Green debut this fall.
Ryan Blankemeier played the last two seasons for the Chicago Steel where he was a teammate of current Big Green players Connor Yau and John Ernsting. As a rookie, he played in all but one contest, registering 31 points. In that first year with Chicago, he and his Steel teammates competed in the Junior Club World Cup (Russia) where they captured a Bronze Medal. Early in his second season, Blankemeier was traded to the Green Bay Gamblers (USHL), where in 54 regular season games he tallied 29 points. Despite a first-round exit in the Clark Cup Playoffs he led his team in goals (4). Before his days in the USHL, Ryan played his minor hockey for the Chicago Young Americans (HPHL). In three years with CYA, he recorded a scoring line of 35-35-70. He was also selected to participate in the 2013 USA Hockey Select-17 Festival.
What made you pick Dartmouth?
Dartmouth had been on my radar since I was little playing hockey. I've had a grandfather, two uncles and a cousin attend, so I had heard about the school and the hockey tradition. I fell in love with the campus and the school, so it was an easy choice.
What is your favorite sports team?
Being from Chicago, my favorite sports team is the Chicago Blackhawks.
Why did you pick the position you play? Did you ever play anything else?
I started off my first year playing hockey as a goalie in a house league, but my team was so dominant that I would rarely see a shot on goal. I figured that's just how playing goal was, and I decided to move to forward where I could score goals which seemed less boring.
If you could visit one place in the world, where would it be?
I would want to visit a country with rich culture and tradition different than ours, like India or Spain.
Where is your favorite place that you have already visited?
I took an exchange trip to China my junior year in high school. The family I stayed with shared their traditions, perspectives and values, which allowed me to compare them to ours and aspects of life that I had previously taken for granted as the way things were.
What are you planning on studying at Dartmouth?
Economics.
Who was your favorite player growing up?
Mario Lemieux. I don't really know why.
Why did you go the route of playing in college rather than some of the other options that are available for players your age?
As I progressed in my career, I always had my eyes set on the college hockey route, because the ability to play hockey at the Division I level and also get a degree from a school like Dartmouth is so beneficial to me after college, no matter which way my career goes.
Any pre-game meals or rituals you have to have?
Like most guys, my pre-game meal is pasta with red sauce. Before games, I sit in the stands listening to music and tape my stick, and when I get dressed it's always the left side before the right side.
You can have a meal with any three people in history, who are they?
The 14th Dalai Lama and Martin Luther King Jr. because that would be an amazing conversation about society and global issues. Also Babe Ruth just to know if he actually called that shot.
If you could switch places with anyone in the world for a day, who would it be and why?
I would want to switch places with the president for one day, just to know how it feels and all of our secrets, but without the lifetime scrutiny.
If you could witness one moment in history, what would it be?
The 1980 Miracle On Ice against the Soviet Union.
