HANOVER, N.H. — Freshman Evan Boudreaux produced his eighth double-double of the season with 25 points and 13 rebounds, while sophomore Taylor Johnson tallied a career-best 22 points as Dartmouth (8-14, 2-6 Ivy) ended a five-game skid by defeating Brown (7-15, 2-6 Ivy) on Saturday night at Leede Arena, 87-70.
Boudreaux reached double digits for the 19th time in 21 games this season by knocking down 9-of-16 shots with a three-pointer to go with 6-of-7 at the line. But Johnson was even more efficient, canning 9-of-12 overall and 3-of-4 from long range as he reached double figures for just the fourth time in his career, all during Ivy League play this season.
Sophomore Miles Wright ignited the crowd with a pair of dunks for the Big Green as he contributed 15 points to the cause, while senior Connor Boehm added 11 to go with seven rebounds. Boudreaux and Boehm nearly outrebounded the enter Bear team, which had just 21 boards, as Dartmouth more than doubled Brown on the glass with 43 caroms, 17 on the offensive end that led to a 16-2 advantage in second-chance points.
The Bears shot an even 50 percent for the game (26-of-52), but took 14 fewer field goal attempts due to the edge on the offensive glass. Tavon Blackmon led Brown with 22 points on 8-of-14 shootins with a pair of triples, while Obi Okolie added 16 points and Cedric Kuakumensah contributed 15 to go with six blocks (all in the first half) and a team-high five rebounds.
Brown scored the first basket of the night on an Okolie three-pointer, but Dartmouth answered right back as sophomore Cameron Smith drove for the basket and converted a three-point play. That began a 12-point Big Green run with Johnson providing the next five.
A Boehm three-pointer boosted the lead to 12 at 17-5, but the Brown strung together nine consecutive points, only to have Dartmouth score the next 11, including a Smith three-pointer and capped by a Boudreaux 10-foot hook shot in the lane. Kuakumensah managed to get the Bear deficit back to single digits with under a minute left in the half on one of his three trifectas in the game, but a free throw allowed the Big Green to own a 10-point advantage at the break thanks in large part to a 13-0 edge in second-chance points.
Johnson led Dartmouth at the intermission with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting while Boudreaux had eight points and seven rebounds despite rarely touching the ball on offense as Brown worked at denying the ball from the Ivy League's third-leading scorer.
Dartmouth was never truly threatened in the second stanza. The lead oscillated between 13 points (after Boudreaux began the half with a three-point play) and 11 until Kuakumensah banked in a triple from the top of the key to close the gap to eight at 47-39. That was the only single-digit difference in the score for the entire second half as Wright answered right back with a one-hand slam off a feed from senior Malik Gill, who finished the night with a game-high five assists off the bench.
Johnson upped the advantage to 17 with 13:18 to play by draining a ball from behind the arc, and three and a half minutes later, another Boudreaux three-point play gave Dartmouth an 18-point lead at 65-47. On the very next possession, Boudreaux drilled a trey the Big Green's biggest lead of the night at 21 points.
Twice Brown got back within 13 points, the second time on a J.R. Hobbie three-pointer, but again Dartmouth answered quickly as Johnson dropped his third triple of the night. When the 6-4 guard hit the second of two free throws a minute later, he had his first career 20-point game before adding a wide-open layup after beating the press.
Dartmouth made 32 of its 66 field goals (.485) on the night, its best accuracy in a month, while converting 16-of-20 at the foul line and 7-of-21 from downtown. Johnson rounded out his stat line with four of the Big Green's 17 assists and five rebounds, while Gill and Boehm each had three steals.
Dartmouth hits the road for the next two weekends, first playing at Cornell (9-13, 2-6 Ivy) on Friday night at 7 p.m. with its sights set on avenging a four-point loss to the Big Red on Jan. 30. The next night the Big Green will play in New York City against the Columbia Lions (17-8, 6-2 Ivy), which handed Dartmouth a 77-60 defeat on Jan. 29.
Notes: Boudreaux is averaging a double-double (21.0 points, 10.8 rebounds) in the eight Ivy League contests to date, leading the league on the boards … the Big Green starting five scored 79 of the 87 points ... Johnson is shooting 60.9 percent from the floor in Ivy League games, the third-best accuracy in the conference.
