LOS ANGELES – The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team fell, 17-4, Wednesday afternoon at South California's McAlister Field.
With the win, the eighth-ranked Trojans remain unbeaten at 8-0 this season, while the loss drops the Big Green to 4-3 overall in 2016 and 1-1 on their California road trip.
“They (USC) created a lot of turnovers and were very effective in turning those mistakes into goal-scoring opportunities,” head coach Amy Patton said. “USC is a very solid team and they played really well.
“Our biggest takeaway has to be to put this game behind us and focus in on the task that is now in front of us and that is Penn on Sunday,” Patton added.
USC jumped out to an early lead on a pair of goals from Michaela Michael in the first five minutes and never looked back. Michael finished the day tied with teammate Caroline deLyra for the game high in goals with four tallies each in the win.
For Dartmouth, it was once again Jaclyn Leto that drove the offense, scoring three of her team's four goals, giving her 26 this season, the most of any player in the Ivy League.
Junior Taryn Deck notched her 12th of the season in the 11th minute to make it a 2-1 game, but that was as close as the visitors got on this day as the Trojans led 9-4 at intermission and held the Green and White without a goal in the final frame.
It was the first time this season that Dartmouth was edged in draw controls as USC held a 14-9 advantage. Leto, Elizabeth Mastrio and Kathryn Giroux each had a pair of draws, while Deck and Lauren Maiorano led the Big Green with three draw ground balls apiece.
Dartmouth attempted just two free positions on the game with Leto scoring on her lone try. On the other side, USC was just 1-for-8 from the 8-meter arc.
Freshman Charlotte Wahle registered seven saves in the game with USC's Gussie Johns stopping four in each half for eight in the winning effort.
The Big Green return to action Sunday against Ivy League rival Penn at Scully-Fahey Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
