HANOVER, N.H. – Home is where the heart is. And for the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team, home is where the wins are.
The Big Green (5-3, 1-1 Ivy) held on for a last-second 10-9 victory against No. 16 Penn (6-3, 1-1 Ivy) Sunday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field, improving to 4-0 this season on their home field.
Senior Jaclyn Leto scored six times and reached 130 goals and 150 points for career, but her biggest contribution of the day came when she caused the Quakers' turnover in the final seconds and Dartmouth clinging to a one-goal victory.
“That was the biggest play of the day for our team,” head coach Amy Patton said. “Jac is a silent leader and has become one of the most well-rounded players in our program's history, which is saying a lot.”
Down a goal and with the ball in Nina Corcoran's hand, Penn was in good shape to tie things up. After all, Corcoan did have a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists at that point.
Facing a double-team behind the net, Corcoran tried to force a pass to Alex Condon just outside the circle for the equalizer. That's when Leto lunged into the passing lane with her stick and followed the deflected ball to the end line for possession as the clock expired, sending the Dartmouth bench into a frenzy as it exploded onto the field to celebrate the team's first win against the Quakers since the 2012 Ivy League title game (0-4).
“I honestly don't know why I was even there, I just knew I wanted that ball more than they did,” Leto said. “I guess I just moved down into position because that gave me the best opportunity to go get it.”
Leto was making plays all day, along with junior Taryn Deck who scored three times in the win; the first of the season against a ranked team.
Down 6-4 at the half, the Green and White went on a 6-0 run in the first 15:58 of the second frame to build a 10-6 lead. In that stretch, Leto scored four of her six goals, while Deck scored twice on assists from Larson Bennett and Campbell Brewer.
Despite a three-goal run in the final 10 minutes, Penn's offense was stymied by the Dartmouth defense anchored by freshman goalkeeper Charlotte Wahle as it sought to pull even with the home team.
Wahle finished the day with six saves, with the Quakers using starter Britt Brown (9 saves) for the first 53:25 of action before switching over to Courtney Rushford (1) in the last stretch in an effort to generate a better transition game up field.
“Charlotte may be a freshman, but she has the attitude of a senior,” Patton said. “She is so consistent, which is what you hope for as a coach when you play a young goalkeeper.
“There wasn't a minute today that I didn't think we'd win that game. Even when we were down in the first half,” Patton added. “We made mistakes, but the way we rebounded from them was what the difference was for us out there.
Once again, Dartmouth collected more draw controls than its opposition, holding a 12-9 edge Sunday. Additionally, a 4-for-4 mark on clearing attempts in the second half, while subsequently holding Penn to a 6-for-9 figure in that same time was a huge reason for the comeback.
“It was a really exciting day for us, especially for the seniors who had never beaten Penn in our careers,” Leto remarked. “We love playing at Scully-Fahey Field, it gives us a lot of confidence and that really showed today.”
Patton felt the same about her program's home field.
“The crowd was amazing today. We feed on that energy. The coaches, the bench, the players on the field, we all do. We love playing at home and today was a perfect example of why.”
The Big Green begin another three-game road trip on Saturday, April 2 at Harvard.
