HANOVER, N.H. — Evan Boudreaux recorded his 10th double-double of the season with 26 points and 13 rebounds to lead Dartmouth to a 72-64 victory over Penn at Leede Arena on Friday night. The freshman knocked down a season-high four three-pointers, all in the first half, to help the Big Green (10-17, 4-9 Ivy) snap a three-game skid and split the season series with the Quakers (11-16, 5-7 Ivy).
Boudreaux, who scored 18 of his 26 points in the first half, was 10-of-15 from the floor and 4-of-6 beyond the arc, against his favorite team. A month ago he scored a season-high 27 points at The Palestra in a seven-point loss to the Quakers. Joining Boudreaux in double figures were sophomore Taylor Johnson with 13 and senior Connor Boehm with 10 to go with eight rebounds.
Max Rothschild matched his season high with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting while making his first career start for Penn. Darnell Foreman added 15 points and Jackson Donahue 11 thanks to a trio of triples.
Across the board, the two teams had very similar statistics. Both teams hit six three-pointers, committed 18 fouls, dished out 12 assists and turned the ball over 15 times. Both teams even took 55 shots, though Dartmouth made 27 compared to 24 for Penn. The Big Green did have a slight 34-32 advantage on the glass, but the Quakers blocked eight shots compared to just one for the home team.
Boudreaux gave notice right away that he had his shooting stroke going for him on this night, draining a 14-foot baseline jumper less than 15 seconds into the contest. His first three-pointer of the night and a bucket in the lane had Dartmouth ahead, 13-8, in the first six minutes.
Penn rallied for seven straight points, capped by a Donahue three-pointer from the corner, to take a 15-13 lead. Two minutes later, Boudreaux drilled his second triple, and the lead went back-and-forth until sophomore Cameron Smith sank two free throws to make it a 20-19 Big Green lead with eight minutes showing on the clock. Dartmouth never trailed again.
Senior Tommy Carpenter triggered the next two buckets with a hook high off the glass and a steal before feeding senior Connor Boehm for a breakaway layup. But when Penn closed the gap to one again on a dunk by Rothschild, Boudreaux cranked up another trifecta, starting an 11-2 spurt that included his fourth trey of the night. The Quakers hit a three-pointer in the final minute, only to have Johnson hit a short jumper in the paint with five seconds left to give Dartmouth a 40-29 lead at the break.
After shooting a whopping 62.5 percent (15-of-24) in the first half, Dartmouth cooled off a bit after halftime at just 38.7 percent. Penn had a similar decline, though not starting as hot at 50 percent (13-of-26), then tailing off to 37.9 percent (11-of-29) in the second stanza.
Like the first half, Boudreaux hit a jumper in the first 15 seconds, and a Smith free throw gave the Green their largest lead of the night at 14 points, 43-29. Donahue traded triples with Johnson, but when the Quaker hit his three long ball of the night with 13:14 remaining, Penn finally got back within single digits at 50-42.
Layups by sophomore Miles Wright and Boudreaux boosted the difference back to 12, but with 9:45 to play, Sam Jones dropped one from distance to make it a 54-45 contest.
Freshman Guilien Smith hit a big three-pointer for Dartmouth a few minutes later to keep the lead at nine. For the next five minutes, any time Penn scored, the Big Green answered. But the Quakers cut the deficit to five on a pair of Foreman free throws with 1:12 left, and he blocked a Johnson shot at the other end. Fortunately for Dartmouth, Johnson was able to gather the blocked shot and reload, sinking a short jumper just outside of the paint with 45 seconds left.
The lead was still 10 when Foreman hit the first of two foul shots with 10 seconds to go. After a Penn timeout, he purposefully missed the second free throw, but the rebound was hauled in by Wright, who sealed the victory with two more freebies.
Dartmouth will attempt to sweep its final weekend of the season for a fourth straight year when Princeton (20-6, 10-2 Ivy) comes to Hanover on Saturday for a 7 p.m. tip. The Tigers suffered a two-point loss at Harvard tonight, meaning they need to win their last two games and get some help from Columbia on Saturday to be able to earn a share of the Ivy title. The game will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network with Jay Burnham calling the action.
Notes: Dartmouth will honor its six seniors — Boehm, Carpenter, Kevin Crescenzi, Malik Gill, Brandon McDonnell and Matt Rennie — prior to the start of the game against Princeton … the sextet comprise the winningest class for the Big Green in 16 years … the last Dartmouth player with more than 10 double-doubles in a season was Crawford Palmer in his lone season in Hanover after transferring from Duke in 1992-93.
