GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Logan Shore twirled one-hit ball over seven stanzas and Peter Alonso drove in three runs as the top-ranked Florida Gators (10-1) blanked visiting Dartmouth, 7-0, on Friday night at McKethan Stadium. Sophomore Kyle Holbrook collected both hits for the Big Green (0-4), which had just one other base runner all evening, that coming on an infield error.
Shore threw just 76 pitches while striking out eight to improve to 3-0 on the season and lower his ERA to 0.43 (one run in 21 innings). Frank Rubio came on and surrendered the other hit to Holbook in the eighth, and Eddy Demurias hurled a perfect ninth to close out the Gator victory.
Florida collected 12 hits against three Dartmouth pitchers, with Alonso one of four players with two hits, one of which being a two-run double. Dalton Guthrie was 2-for-4 on the night with two runs and two RBIs, and Deacon Lipot singled and triple in four trips to the plate.
Big Green senior right-hander Duncan Robinson got into trouble right away in the first as Buddy Reed rapped a one-out single, stole second and scored two batters later on an Alonso single through the right side for a 1-0 Gator lead.
In the third, Florida tallied its second run on a two-out single by Jeremy Vasquez, plating Guthrie who had led off the inning with a base hit.
Liput began the fourth with his three-bagger, and Dartmouth elected to draw the infield in. The strategy worked as Robinson induced a grounder to short for the first out. The next batter hit a come backer, and Robinson got Liput into a rundown between third and home, only to have Liput scamper safely back to third and the batter to take second during the pickle. Guthrie followed with a two-run single back through the box, and J.J. Schwarz added a two-out, RBI single to give the Gators a 5-0 lead.
Holbrook was able to break up the modest no-hit bid with two out in the fifth when he dropped a single just in front of the diving Reed in center field.
In the sixth, the Gators greeted junior reliever Chris Burkholder with a pair of runs on Alonso's two-out, two-run two-bagger over the center fielder's head, concluding the scoring in the game.
Robinson (0-2) was stuck with the loss after yielding five runs in five frames on nine hits and a pair of walks while striking out three.
The two teams will play the second contest of the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
Notes: This was the first game for Dartmouth against the number-one team in the country since playing two games against Virginia six years ago almost to the day (March 6-7, 2010) ... this is the fourth time in the last eight seasons the Big Green have started the year 0-4. They went on to win the Rolfe Division in the Ivy League the first three times ... Dartmouth has just two runs in its first four games and has not scored in its last 24 innings.
