Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2018 who are currently in their “Sophomore Summers.”
Kate Letkewicz is a guard on the women's basketball team from Waterloo, Iowa. Last season she was the team's top three-point shooter and the Big Green's second leading scorer, averaging 12.4 points per game.
You had a breakout sophomore year with the Big Green last season emerging as the team's top three-point shooter. What are your thoughts on your performance in 2015-16?
I was pretty pleased with myself and even more pleased that our team finished among the top four in the Ivy League but, personally, I think I can always do more. I am super excited to grow this offseason and keep raising the level along with my teammates.
What is one of your favorite or best memories thus far at Dartmouth?
I really look forward to Homecoming Weekend every fall. From throwing candy in the parade, to the watching the massive bonfire burn, to attending the football game, it is a really fun tradition that brings our whole program (past, present and future) together for a weekend.
What is your favorite or best memory from traveling on the road with the Big Green for the past two seasons?
I loved going to California over Thanksgiving my freshman year. Coach Maria's family was kind enough to host a delicious team dinner at the beach house they rented, which allowed for some great bonding time. When the sun went down on that Thanksgiving night, we built a bonfire in the sand and sat around it, singing songs while Coach Belle played her guitar.
How long have you been playing basketball and what got you interested in the sport?
I have been playing basketball since probably 1st or 2nd grade, whenever the earliest organized league was offered in Waterloo. I am the baby of the family so I grew up going to all my older brother and sister's sports games. I wanted to do whatever they did, so fortunately I was able to get started early.
Outside of your school work and sport, what do you like to do in your free time?
I really value my alone time when I am not in class or on the court. Dartmouth women's basketball is a very close family and we spend probably 90 percent of our time together so it is nice to have some quiet downtime when I can. I love taking naps, reading, watching movies and attempting (because I am not very good, haha) to do little crafty things like knitting and making beaded bracelets to give to my friends.
If you were a box of cereal what flavor would you be and why?
I guess I would say Fruity Pebbles because I think it's a pretty light and fun cereal. That is how I try to be when I play basketball; the game should never be stressful or feel like a burden. It brings me so much happiness to be on the court with my best friends and I cannot help but have fun with them.
If you could time travel to any moment in history what would it be and why?
Definitely the '80s!! I just watched the movie Love and Basketball and I really like the basketball fashion style during that decade, especially the sneakers!
If your won $1 million dollars what would you do with money/what would you buy first?
I have a slight shoe obsession so the first thing I would buy would be about ten pairs of Nikes.
What are you looking forward to in your junior season and beyond?
I am looking forward to winning that 18th Ivy League Championship! Our team is very talented and I feel we are more driven right now than ever.
