HANOVER, N.H. – Despite outshooting Hartford by a 10-5 margin, the Dartmouth men's soccer team fell to Hartford, 1-0, at Burnham Field on Wednesday night.
The loss drops the Big Green to 1-2-3, while the Hawks improve to 3-3-1.
Dartmouth came out in the first half with a different look to its lineup, as the Big Green started Henry Stusnick in goal for his first career start in Hanover.
“I think overall we felt good about portions of the game tonight,” Dartmouth head coach Chad Riley said. “Credit to Hartford, they capitalized on a couple of mistakes. I think we created some good chances in the first half, but I think we could have made their keeper work a little harder with what we had.”
The Big Green came out strong in the opening minutes of the contest with a couple of solid scoring opportunities. About midway through the half Dartmouth had a good look on a free kick, but the shot sailed over the crossbar. On the defensive side of the ball, the Big Green did a nice job cutting down space in front of the Hawks.
Hartford's first quality scoring opportunity came on a penalty shot when one of its players was taken down in the box. Friis Mads lined up for the shot, but put too much on the ball and sent it high above the goal.
A few minutes later the Hawks continued to apply pressure in Dartmouth's end of the field. After Stusnick made a great initial save in the box, Andri Jonasson fired in the lose ball for the only tally of the game in the 35th minute.
After halftime, the Big Green came out looking to get the equalizer and nearly got it when Justin Donawa went on a short breakaway, but his shot was turned aside by the keeper.
Dartmouth's defense continued to play well in front of Stusnick throughout the remainder of the match. When the Big Green's goalkeeper found himself out of position, Ricardo Gomez stepped up and blocked what would have been a Hartford goal, keeping it a one-goal affair.
Dartmouth's best chance to tie the game came with 15 minutes to play when the Big Green had three corner kicks in three minutes. Dartmouth held an 8-1 advantage in corners through 90 minutes of action.
“When you have eight corners you want to try to get a goal on one of them,” Riley said. “I think we had good delivery and had good chances. It's just something that we will continue to work on and improve.”
The Big Green will return to action this Saturday when they travel to twin state rival Vermont at 7 p.m. That game can be seen for free on America East TV.
