CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After a successful season-opening race last weekend at the Hadley Chase, the Dartmouth women's rowing team headed to Cambridge on Saturday for the 54th annual Head of the Charles Regatta. The Big Green did well on day one, taking third and fourth in the Club 4+ and Club 8+, respectively.
Â
First held on Oct. 16, 1965, the Head of the Charles is the largest two-day regatta in the world, with 11,000 athletes rowing in over 1,900 boats in 61 events. It attracts roughly 400,000 spectators during regatta weekend and needs over 1,400 volunteers to make it run as smoothly as it does.
Â
The Big Green kicked off the weekend with a third-place finish (18:56.45) out of 52 boats in the Club 4+. Stroked by
Alexandra Kent and coxed by
Emilie Baxter, Dartmouth started off strongly, making it to the Riverside Boat Club in fifth place and had already moved up to third when it had made it to the Weld Boathouse six minutes later. The Green finished strong, beating Penn by just half a second.
Â
Dartmouth had another good showing in the Club 8+, taking fourth (17:19.41). The crew – which was stroked by
Sophie Stone and coxed by
Mikayla Hubner – were in fifth place for the majority of the race until they arrived at the Cambridge Boat Club, where the Big Green moved up a spot. Dartmouth dug deep and remained in fourth until the end.
Â
The Big Green's Championship 8+ will row on Sunday afternoon.
