CONCORD, N.H. – Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Hockey Bob Gaudet '81 and former player Rich Ryerson '80 were inducted into the New Hampshire Legends of Hockey Hall of Fame Sunday afternoon.
Gaudet and Ryerson were two-of-six individuals inducted into the Granite State's hockey hall of fame as members of the Class of 2018. Also going in were former Hanover High School and Vermont defenseman Brendan Creagh (player), UNH goalie Brian Foster (player), Don McKinnon (referee) and Tony Urban (builder).
Former longtime New Hampshire head coach Dick Umile was the keynote speaker and talked about his many encounters with Gaudet over the years as the two Division I college hockey coaches in the state.
When it was Gaudet's time to speak, he thanked his parents, his wife and kids, assistant coaches and staff throughout the years and most importantly the hundreds of players who have come through Hanover in his time behind the Dartmouth bench.
"One of the proudest days of my life was putting on that Dartmouth jersey for the first time and one of the saddest days was taking it off for the final time," Gaudet said. "Representing this program and institution is one of the greatest and most rewarding experiences of my life and I have spent the last two decades trying to instill that same sense of pride in the players who I have coached."
Gaudet is on the verge of a pair of milestone wins. He currently has 398 career victories between Dartmouth and Brown, while amassing 305 of those at his alma mater in 21 seasons, just three behind legendary coach Eddie Jeremiah's program record, a feat Umile touched upon twice in his speech.
Ryerson goes in as a player after a stellar career at St. Paul's School before coming to Dartmouth. While a member of the Big Green, the Concord native played in 111 games and registered 55 points on 29 goals and 26 points from 1976-80. He and Gaudet were teammates for three seasons, helping the College on the Hill reach consecutive Frozen Fours in both 1979 and 1980.
His connection to his alma mater did not end with his graduation as Ryerson served as the President of the Friends of Dartmouth Men's Hockey for a decade, working to continue the growth and development of the program.
Ryerson joins his father Richard Ryerson — a 2006 inductee — in the Legends of Hockey. With Sunday's ceremonies, the Ryersons became the third father-son duo to be enshrined.
Additionally, the Manchester Flames and Manchester Regional Youth Hockey Association (MRYAH) were honored for their contributions to growing the game at a grassroots level in New Hampshire over 50 years.
Gaudet and his 2018-19 Big Green team begin the regular season Saturday, Oct. 27 (7 p.m.) at home against Harvard as part of Homecoming Weekend. Dartmouth will play the US National Team Development Program U-18 Team Monday night (7 p.m.) in a preseason exhibition that is free and open to the public. Ryerson '80 and Gaudet '81
