HANOVER, N.H. – Cy Lippold set career highs with 25 points and seven 3-pointers to lead the Big Green past UMass Lowell, 70-54, Wednesday night at Leede Arena. With the win, Dartmouth is back over .500 with a 5-4 record and has won three consecutive games, while UMass Lowell falls to 3-8.
To go along with Lippold,
Annie McKenna tied her career highs with 14 points and seven assists.
Isalys Quinones finished with 11 points and six rebounds, while
Kealy Brown tallied 11 points and four rebounds.
Paula Lenart led all players with 12 rebounds and
Elle Louie pulled down seven boards for the Big Green.
"It was a slow start and we talked about trying our best to be consistent with bringing great energy right off the bat," said
Belle Koclanes, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "The way we want to play is what you saw in the third quarter, that's DWB basketball. Generating offense from our defensive pressure, playing fast in the open floor, knocking down threes and
Cy Lippold set a career high while playing in the offense." Koclanes continued.
Like they have during every game in this home stand, Dartmouth broke out to an early lead. McKenna got the Big Green going with a floater in the lane and Quinones followed that with a jumper in the first two minutes. Lippold knocked down her first three of the game with 8:03 on the clock and McKenna drove and finished at the rim to extend the Dartmouth lead to 9-2 in the first three minutes. The River Hawks closed the gap to 11-7 before Lippold drilled her second triple of the quarter to push the lead back to 14-7. Dartmouth did not score for the final three minutes of the first and took a 14-11 advantage to the second.
UMass Lowell opened the second with an early bucket to make it a one-point game. Quinones stole an inbounds pass and scored underneath and
Katie Douglas connected on a triple to extend the lead to 19-13 with 6:30 to go until the half. The River Hawks closed the half on a 7-2 run to bring the score to 21-20 at halftime.
An offensive explosion was the story in the third and Dartmouth brought the energy, outscoring UMass Lowell, 30-13. Lippold caught fire drilling five 3-pointers in the quarter and led the charge during a 23-5 run for the Big Green, McKenna had six points in the run. At the end of the third, Dartmouth led 51-33.
Dartmouth did not take its foot off the gas pedal in the fourth. After the River Hawks scored the first bucket, Lippold hit a mid-range jumper to give her a career-high 25 points to extend the lead to 53-35. The Big Green kept it coming,
Kealy Brown eclipsed double figures with a bucket with 3:04 left to make it a 68-43 lead. Dartmouth put in all five of its freshmen in the closing minutes, giving a glimpse of what the future holds as the Big Green cruised to the win.
The Big Green are back at it on Tuesday the 18th when they take on Buffalo at 7 p.m. at Leede Arena. The Bulls advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament last season.
