SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Three Cal Poly pitchers combined to toss a six-hit shutout in defeating Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon at Baggett Stadium, 5-0, to complete a three-game sweep of the Big Green. Colby Berrick was a perfect 3-for-3 for the Mustangs (11-12) and scored three of the five runs as the hosts completed a three-game sweep of Dartmouth (3-12).
Darren Nelson (3-2) earned the victory for his 5.1 innings of work during which he allowed just three hits and three walks to go with five strikeouts while throwing 89 pitches. He departed with one on and one out in the sixth, and Taylor Dollard continued to put zeroes on the board for the next three innings before Matt Arens got the final two outs to complete the Mustangs' second shutout of the season.
Cal Poly scored once in each of the first four frames against senior Clay Chatham, getting on the board in the first on an unearned run. Alex McKenna led off with a single, went to third on an error and scored on a squeeze bunt by clean-up hitter Nick Meyer.
A leadoff single in both the second and the third led to a run in each stanza. A wild pitch and a Nick DiCarlo single back through box scored Barrick in the second, and Kyle Marinconz singled McKenna to third before Bradlee Beesley lofted a sacrifice fly to right for a 3-0 lead.
The Mustangs loaded the bases in the fourth on a one-out walk, double by Josh George and a hit batter. Dylan Doherty drove home the tally with a fly to center.
Chatham retired the side in order in the fifth before departing in the sixth with runners on second and third and two down. Freshman left-hander Max Hunter took the mound and induced a slow roller up the middle that Doherty beat out, though not without an argument from Dartmouth head coach Bob Whalen, for an RBI single and a 5-0 Mustang lead.
The Big Green's best opportunity to score came in the seventh when junior Nate Ostmo and senior Justin Fowler led off the inning with singles. But Dollard induced a double-play grounder — one of three on the day for the Cal Poly defense — on the very next pitch and got the third out on a routine fly to right.
Dartmouth nearly spoiled the shutout with two gone in the ninth when Ostmo rapped out his second single of the game and took second on a wild pitch. Fowler then hit a sinking liner to center that McKenna made a diving catch on to end the game.
Chatham (1-2) allowed the five runs, four earned, in 5.2 innings of work on eight hits and a walk while fanning four. Hunter kept the Mustangs off the board over the final 2.1 innings while scattering four hits to go with a strikeout.
Dartmouth returns to Hanover following its 1-8 spring trip to California to host Quinnipiac (8-11) on Wednesday for its home opener at 3 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network, now available on Apple TV, Roku and the ILN app for Android and Apple devices, with Wayne Young '72 calling the action.
Notes: Senior Dustin Shirley had his career-long 12-game hit streak snapped by going 0-for-4 today. It was the longest hit streak by a Big Green player since Matt Parisi hit safely in the final 13 games of the 2013 season and the first two the following year for a 15-gamer … Dartmouth has lost six straight, its longest skid since opening the 2016 campaign with six losses.
