BOSTON, Mass. – Dartmouth men's lacrosse opened the season on the road on Saturday, falling to Boston University by a score of 15-8.
Ben Martin led the team with six points from two goals and four assists (and was the second highest scorer on the field behind Chris Gray with his nine points), while
George Prince netted one goal and tacked on two assists for three points.
Matt Paul and
Harlan Smart ended the game with two points apiece, and
Trevor Ballantyne had one from a goal.
In his first game in a green and white jersey,
Daniel Hincks played all 60 minutes, making 11 saves while being saddled with the loss.
"Today, we came out with some first game jitters," head coach
Brendan Callahan said. "It is something that we have to deal with every year and you can hope you can survive that, settle in and compete. Boston made us pay by going up 6-0. After the first quarter, I thought we played a pretty even game, but you can't spot a good team that much to start the game. A lot of our guys got some valuable experience today and we will get a better from here."
BU (2-1) dominated the first quarter, scoring six goals while keeping Dartmouth (0-1) out of the net. The second was a lot more eventful, as a combined 12 goals were scored. The Big Green looked stronger, getting on the board less than 30 seconds in thanks to Martin. The teams went back-and-forth and the Terriers took a 12-6 advantage into the third. Martin, Prince, Smart and Paul had a hand in all six of Dartmouth's tallies.
Just two goals were netted in the third quarter. The first, scored six minutes in by Ballantyne, pulled the Big Green within five of the Terriers, but BU increased its lead by one with 50 seconds to go (13-7).
Martin added his second goal of the game 30 seconds into the fourth but, try as they might, the Green could not get another one past the Terriers' goalie. The home team would add two more a minute and a half apart to end the game (15-8).
Next Saturday, Feb. 23, Dartmouth will be on the road again, this time taking on Bryant.
