HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League announced its first weekly awards for baseball this afternoon, and Dartmouth freshman
Trystan Sarcone landed the Rookie of the Week honor. This is the 14th consecutive year in which the Big Green have had at least one player take home the rookie honor, while no other team in the conference has an active streak longer than five seasons (Brown).
A left-handed pitcher from Greenwich, Connecticut, Sarcone made his collegiate debut on the mound when he trotted in from the bullpen in the sixth inning of the third game at UTSA this past weekend. Although the Roadrunners had already scored 12 runs, the southpaw subdued their bats for three frames, holding them scoreless on three hits and a pair of walks while striking out four. The only real trouble he found himself in came in his final inning of work when the Roadrunners loaded the bases with two outs, but Sarcone calmly caught the final batter looking at strike three to end the threat.
Dartmouth (1-3) returns to the diamond this weekend for four games at the USA Baseball complex in Cary, North Carolina. First up will be Tulane (6-2), which suffered both of its losses to 10th-ranked Ole Miss in a three-game series, on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Big Green will play Fairleigh Dickinson (1-0-1) in a Saturday doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. before concluding its weekend against Saint Joseph's (1-3) at noon on Sunday.
Notes: The last Big Green player to be named the Ivy's Rookie of the Week was catcher
Bennett McCaskill on April 9 of last year … Yale's Benny Wanger and Scott Politz were the Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, as the Bulldogs had the only other win in the league this past weekend out of 12 games.
