PISCATAWAY, N.J. — One day after scoring 33 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Princeton, the Dartmouth Big Green could muster only two against Tigers right-hander Andrew Gnazzo as Princeton (4-13, 1-2 Ivy) salvaged the final game of the opening Ivy League series on Sunday at Rutgers' Blainton Field.
Dartmouth (7-11, 2-1 Ivy) had numerous opportunities to put more runs on the board but left 12 men on base as the Green collected seven hits — by seven different hitters — four walks and a pair of hit batsmen.
Princeton tagged Big Green starter
Tyler Fagler (0-2) for three runs in the first as each of the first three batters recorded hits. Chris Davis doubled, took third on Jake Boone's single and crossed the plate on a Nadir Lewis knock to center. David Harding drove in Boone on an infield out, and with two down, Max West stroked an RBI single for an early 3-0 lead.
After Gnazzo held Dartmouth scoreless for the first three frames, the Big Green started pecking away in the fourth. Sophomore
Logan Adams dropped a two-out single into right to score classmate
Ubaldo Lopez, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Dartmouth then loaded the bases before Gnazzo quelled the rally on a fly to right.
In the sixth, a free pass to junior
Blake Crossing (who reached base three times) was followed by a wild pitch to put a runner in scoring position with nobody out. Gnazzo struck out the next two hitters — two of his 11 on the day — before senior
Sean Sullivan poked a ball to left for an RBI single, cutting the deficit to one.
But the Tigers answered back in their half of the sixth. Freshman
Nathan Skinner, who had come on in relief to start the second stanza, issued a one-out walk before Ramzi Haddad hit the very next pitch over the fence in left, his first home run of the season, to make it a 5-2 Princeton lead.
Princeton tacked on three more in the seventh when Max West hit a double with the bases loaded, scoring all three runners.
Gnazzo (1-3) completed eight innings on the mound, throwing 142 pitches, before Reece Rabin set down the side in order in the ninth to close out the Tigers' victory.
Lewis had three of Princeton's nine hits with a triple, scoring twice, while West was 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
Dartmouth next plays at Quinnipiac (8-11) on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
Notes: The Big Green had won six straight against Princeton, matching their longest win streak in the history of the series between the two teams … the victory was the Tigers' 100th in the all-time series, which they lead, 100-91 …
Ubaldo Lopez doubled in the seventh, extending his hitting streak to six games during which he has hit .409 (9-for-22) with five doubles, two home runs and 11 RBIs for a slugging percentage of .909.
