HANOVER, N.H. – For the fifth time in six weeks, the Ivy League Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week comes from Dartmouth.
Â
Junior midfielder
Katie Bourque earned a distinction from the Ivy office for the first time in her career, being tabbed as the league's top defender for her play against Vermont and Cornell last week.
Â
Bourque, known for her offensive prowess, was a force in the midfield and on transition defense against the Catamounts and Big Red. Her four caused turnovers against Cornell on Saturday helped thwart any possible comeback bid by the visitors and tied her career high set as a rookie in 2017.
Â
She finished the week with eight total draw controls, recording four in each game. Against Cornell, those proved to be huge as the gained possession in the midfield led to goals and a mounting lead that proved to be too much for the Big Red to overcome as Dartmouth improved to 5-1 in league play and remained atop the conference standings.
Â
Additionally, Bourque had four ground balls against Cornell, several of which followed her caused turnovers in the midfield.
Â
For the week, the junior and Ridgewood, New Jersey, native finished with eight draws, six caused turnovers and six ground balls in addition to her four goals and five points. Her lone goal against the Big Red came a player down and proved to be the 100th point of her career.
Â
Bourque joins
Kathryn Giroux,
Claire Marshall and
Kiera Vrindten (twice) as the members of this year's team to earn the weekly defensive accolade.
Â
Dartmouth closes out the 2019 regular season Saturday at Yale before it plays in the Ivy League Tournament the following weekend at Columbia. The Green and White can clinch a share of the Ivy title with a win against the Bulldogs, while a win and a Princeton loss in Ithaca would give Dartmouth the crown outright. Dartmouth can finish no lower than second in the standings.
