Kealy Brown scored a season-high 11 points
HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's basketball got off to a hot start, but ended up falling to Princeton, 66-34, Friday night at Leede Arena. The Big Green (7-9, 1-2 Ivy League) held the Tigers (14-1, 2-0 Ivy) to their lowest shooting percentage in their last six games (38.7%).
Kealy Brown put together season highs of 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting and seven rebounds to lead the Big Green. Paula Lenart held down the fort on the defensive end, giving Princeton's post players trouble throughout the night, the senior matched the game high with eight rebounds and two blocked shots.
The battle on the boards was close, with Princeton edging Dartmouth with a 43-38 advantage.
"There were some really bright spots that we're going to bring with us immediately into Penn tomorrow," said Belle Koclanes, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "The first was our start, we came out with a high level of intensity against a high-level team. Another bright spot was that we took charges and rebounded. Offensively, we're executing well, now we just need the ball to go in the basket."
Dartmouth got off to a fast start and led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter. Elle Louie scored 30 seconds into the game and Asha Taylor followed with an and-one bucket. After Princeton retook a 6-5 advantage, the Big Green went on a 9-2 surge, led by seven consecutive points by Brown, to take a 14-8 lead. The Tigers answered with the final five points, including a buzzer-beating three to make it a one-point game after the first 10 minutes.
Brown and McKenna combined for five points to boost the Dartmouth lead to 19-16 with 6:58 to go until the half. That would be the last lead of the night as Princeton took control, with a 15-2 half-ending run, to go ahead 31-21 at the break.
Princeton didn't take its foot off the gas pedal as it expanded its margin, outscoring Dartmouth 19-4 through virtually the entire third quarter, for a total run of 34-6. That ended when Katie Douglas threw up a mid-court prayer that was answered at the end of the third to make it a 50-28 deficit.
The Tigers started the final 10 minutes by outscoring the Big Green 11-4, putting the game out of reach.
Back-to-back Ivy League player of the year, Bella Alarie, finished with 23 points and eight rebounds for the Tigers.
Dartmouth will play the second of a back-to-back weekend at 5 p.m. at Leede Arena against the Penn Quakers, who enter the contest at 10-5 (0-2 Ivy).
