PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — With two down in the seventh of a scoreless battle, Brandt Nowaski belted a full-count pitch just over the fence and off the foul pole down the line in right for his first career home run to lift Indiana State (2-3) to a 1-0 victory over Dartmouth (0-1), spoiling the Big Green's season opener on Friday afternoon at the Snowbird Classic. Three Sycamore pitchers combined on the two-hit shutout, striking out a dozen Big Green batters along the way.
Dartmouth right-hander
Austen Michel and ISU southpaw Tristan Weaver threw goose eggs over the first six innings, rarely facing trouble. Weaver stranded a runner at second in both the second and third innings, then settled in and retired 12 in a row after a two-out double off the bat of
Justin Murray.
Michel had it even easier, yielding just a two-out walk in the first and a two-out single in the second and third frames. Like Weaver, he retired 12 straight hitters as both sides went down in order in the middle three stanzas.
But with two outs in the top of the seventh, Sycamore head coach Mitch Hannahs lifted Weaver as the left-hander had thrown 102 pitches. Reliever Austin Cross came on and hurled just one pitch to get the third out on a grounder to second.
In the bottom half, Michel quickly disposed of the first two hitters on a strikeout and a grounder to short before Nowaskie worked the count full. Michel's 87th and final pitch ended up down and in to the lefty swinger, and Nowaskie golfed it over the fence for the tie-breaking blast.
Cross ran into some trouble in the eighth when freshman
Kolton Freeman legged out an infield hit, took second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a grounder to short. With the tying run 90 feet away,
Trevor Johnson worked his second walk of the afternoon, and ISU summoned closer Tyler Grauer to the mound to subdue the Big Green. The lefty did his job, getting a foul pop to first to end the threat, then retired the side in order in the ninth for his second save of the season.
Cross (1-0) was credited with the victory, though Weaver fanned 11 hitters in his 6.2 innings of one-hit work, walking two along the way.
Michel (0-1), an All-Ivy Second Team reliever two years ago, was the tough-luck loser after missing nearly his entire junior season with an injury. He surrendered the one run on three hits and one walk, fanning five. Freshman
Jack Metzger got the final four outs, one via strikeout, in his collegiate debut.
Dartmouth will play a doubleheader tomorrow against Chicago State beginning at noon. Both games will be streamed live through FloBaseball.
