Annie McKenna nearly had a triple-double for the Big Green
HANOVER, N.H. – Annie McKenna nearly had a triple-double with 18 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, but Brown outscored Dartmouth 19-9 in the first quarter, on its way to handing the home team an 83-71 defeat Friday night at Leede Arena.
The Big Green (7-11, 1-4 Ivy League) sunk 10 3-pointers and were 11-of-12 from the free throw line, while the Bears (7-11, 1-4 Ivy) halt a five-game losing streak, drilled 11 triples and shot 18-of-21 from the charity stripe.
"The conversation in the locker room was about effort, pride and having a winning mentality," said Belle Koclanes, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "Not a great first half tonight and it hurt us. The second half we brought much better energy and found a lineup that was able to make it exciting the fourth quarter."
McKenna's nine assists are a career high and marked the 13th game in double figures this season for the senior. Allie Harland put together a double-digit performance for the second-straight contest with 12 points on 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. Katie Douglas and Asha Taylor each had eight points, while Elle Louie finished with six points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Dartmouth got out to an early 6-2 lead with triples by Douglas and Taylor. Brown then found its stroke and closed the quarter on a 17-3 run to go up 10 after one.
Brown continued to apply pressure and took a 20-point advantage at the 4:10 mark in the second. The Big Green then went on a 10-0 run as Anna Luce hit back-to-back 3-pointers followed by fast-break buckets by McKenna and Louie to help cut the deficit to 38-26 at halftime.
McKenna made it an eight-point game with consecutive jumpers to open the third, but a 12-4 Brown run extended the visitors lead to 53-34 with 5:05 to go in the third. Dartmouth closed the quarter on a 7-2 run with four points by McKenna and a 3-pointer from Harland to make it a 14-point game after 30 minutes.
The best the Big Green could do in the fourth was cut the deficit to seven after starting the quarter on a 12-3 surge. From there, both sides traded triples and the Bears made their free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach.
Dartmouth returns to action Saturday for a 4 p.m. matchup against Yale at Leede Arena. The Big Green will wear pink for their Play4Kay game for breast cancer awareness and will honor their alumnae at halftime.
