Big win for men's basketball on a big stage
Following its 63-38 dismantling of Catholic University the day before, the Dartmouth men's basketball team was paired up against Ohio State in the NCAA East Regional final at Madison Square Garden with the winner advancing to the championship game. This was the Big Green's second trip to the regional final in three years, having knocked off Kentucky in 1942 to play in the title game.
Due to World War II, the Dartmouth roster was primarily made up of Naval and Marine trainees that shuffled in and out of the college with only three full-time students (sophomore captain Audley Brindley, junior John Monahan and senior Joe Vancisin) suiting up for the Green. Two of the Marine trainees, Lionel Baxter and Thomas Killick, played on the team for most of the season and averaged over 10 points a game but were not available by the time the NCAA tournament rolled around. Yet head coach Earl Brown — taking over for Ozzie Cowles who served in the U.S. Navy during this season — found a way to cobble together the shifting roster into a dominant team that went 19-2, winning 17 of those games by double digits.
This game featured an All-America matchup between Brindley, a center who averaged 16.2 points a game, against Ohio State forward, Don Grate. Brindley asserted himself in the opening half, hitting eight shots and another at the foul line to provide 17 points, while the Dartmouth defense held Grate to just four. The Big Green needed every bit of Brindley's production as they held a slim 31-28 at the intermission.
In the second stanza, Dartmouth had a more balanced attack, though Brindley still paced the squad with 11 more points to finish the contest with a season-high 28. Richard McGuire and Harry Leggat provided three baskets apiece as the latter ended the night with 12 points and the former nine. Those three, along with Bob Gale, played the entire game, while Vancisin and Monahan split time at the point as the Big Green prevailed, 60-53, for their 17th consecutive victory. For the Buckeyes, Arnold Risen led the way with 21 points while Grate wrapped up a disappointing game with just seven.
The title game was played three days later at Madison Square Garden against the winner of the West, Utah. Both teams struggled to score in the overtime thriller, but the Utes eventually prevailed, 42-40.
