Dartmouthsports.com will be recognizing the senior student-athletes who had their spring seasons canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today's Senior … Austen Michel, co-captain of the baseball team.
DartmouthSports.com: What is your most memorable on-field team moment?
Austen Michel: My sophomore year, Dustin Shirley hit a walk-off home run to beat Brown, and we exploded out of the dugout to meet him at the plate. Walk-off home runs are exciting enough, but the way he flipped the bat and showed us his emotion going around the bases made it even more memorable.
DS: And your most memorable on-field individual moment?
AM: While this may not be my most successful moment, my first Ivy League appearance against Brown my freshman year was one that I will always remember. I came in to pitch the 9
th inning at home and went 1-2-3 striking out the last guy to end the game. My catcher Adam Gauthier, who was a fifth-year senior and someone I had a lot of respect for, came out to greet me with the ball and said, "Welcome to the Ivy League kid." I still have that baseball on my shelf at home because it reminds me of that moment.
DS: Baseball players are known for nicknames. What is yours on the team and how did you get it?
AM: My nickname is Sten, which is pretty simple because you just take off the first two letters of my first name. Sorry for not having a cooler story about it.
DS: Any hidden talents you can share?
AM: Since the quarantine I've been spending a lot of time with my sister who is very artistic. I painted a picture of a Minion from Despicable Me and I was very proud of the outcome, I may have found my new calling.
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
AM: Ben Rice. I originally wanted to be a catcher in college, and sometimes I miss being behind the plate so that certainly has some appeal. On top of that, Rice has a beautiful swing and has crazy pop, so I'd like to know what that's like to be able to blast balls out of the park on demand.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
AM: My favorite place on campus is Chi Heorot fraternity, where most guys on the team have joined. This is the place on campus where we as a team can come together, enjoy each other's company in a social setting and form a deeper relationship with each other off the field. The relationships on this team are what makes Dartmouth Baseball special, and that is much off the field as it is on the field.
DS: What are your plans after Dartmouth (or the spring term in general)?
AM: This fall I'll be heading off to New York City and beginning my professional life as an associate for AlphaSights. Even though the woods of Hanover to the streets of Manhattan are completely opposite environments, I'm excited to start my post-college and post-baseball career. Being part of the Dartmouth Baseball program doesn't last just 4 years, it lasts a lifetime, so I'll be back to campus as much as possible and I'll always cheer on the Big Green.
Superlatives
Fastest runner on the team: Eric Stolt. His stride length alone scares me as a pitcher because when you look over to check his lead, he's 20 feet off the base but it only takes him two strides to get back to the bag.
Best overall fielder: Trevor Johnson has always been able to track down balls in the outfield that nobody else on the team can get to, and now that his shoulder is healthy again he's able to gun down runners using the cannon of an arm he has.
Best eye at the plate: Michael Calamari. Some of my toughest battles in inter-squad or Leverone have been with Squid because he simply doesn't chase anything out of the zone. His discipline and his ability to foul off tough pitches is why he's such a tough out and why he's had success at this level.
Best hitter for contact: Squid
Best hitter for power: Ubaldo Lopez
Best throwing arm (position player): Kade Kretzschmar has a rocket from the outfield.
Most accurate thrower (position player): Blake Crossing. I can't remember him ever making a throwing error, and he gets on the mound and pumps strikes without any warmups.
Best fastball: Justin Murray. He is one of the few guys on the team who can rear back and pump fastballs by guys when he needs to, and coupled with his 2 seam and his off speed stuff, he's impressive to watch on the mound.
Best breaking ball: Trystan Sarcone. His curveball is one of the best on the team and has made huge improvements this year compared to last year. The biggest difference that I've noticed is that he's throwing it harder which leads to a sharper break, and he's been more consistent about getting it in the zone. When his curve is sharp it's an absolute hammer coming in from the left side.
Best changeup: Max Hunter has some days where the only pitch he has going for him is a changeup, and he still can be successful which is extremely impressive. On the days he has all his stuff, that's when he's lights out.
Best control: Jack Metzger and
Max Hunter were always at the top of the strike percentage sheets this year.
Best flip player: Michael Parsons. When Parsons' limbs start flying around and he comes at you with the ball in his glove, there's no predicting where he's going with it, it all has to be reactionary.
Strongest teammate: Blake Crossing can put up some huge numbers on all the exercises we do, but the one time we played touch football during conditioning he decided to roll his ankle running in a straight line. Less lifting more coordination Blake!!
Funniest teammate: Nathan Skinner's sense of humor is so off the deep end and so consistent that you truly don't know when he's trying to be funny and when he's serious, which I think is when he's at his best.
Most outgoing:
Kolton Freeman. I have never met someone who cares less about what other people think about him than Kolton. He is truly just himself and does it 100 percent at all times, and I have nothing but respect for it.
Best dresser: Kolton Freeman again. He casually rocks scarves and button down shirts to class or just simply around campus, so purely on effort alone he deserves this one.
Best player to spend time in the bullpen with:
Logan Adams. Whether I was down in the pen getting ready to go in the game, or just hanging out, I always wanted Logan there with me to keep me loose and have some laughs with.
Best impression of Coach Whalen (will anyone admit to this?): I'll throw myself in the ring for this one, as I was taught the importance of a good impression by my older teammates since I came into the program four years ago.
