HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth volleyball fell to Penn in five sets (25-17, 22-25, 17-25, 25-16, 13-15) at the Palestra on Saturday evening.
Â
Makenzie Arent got her sixth double-double of the year (40A, 21D), both of which were season-bests.
Nicole Liddle led with a season-best 20 kills and 21 points and
Francesca Meldrum was first with four total blocks.
Â
Dartmouth (8-4, 0-3) vs. Penn (4-8, 1-2)
The Big Green had a great start to the first set, winning eight of the first nine points from three Quaker errors and kills by Liddle,
Bomi Ogunlari,
Ellie Blain and Meldrum. Penn got back within three but were kept at arm's length for the remainder of the set. Ahead by a score of 22-16, back-to-back kills by Liddle got the Green to set point, while one more error by the Quakers gave the win to Dartmouth (25-17).
Â
There were 11 ties in a close second set, with neither team able to pull ahead for long. With the Big Green leading by one thanks to a Meldrum kill, a three-point run on the other side of the net put the Quakers up (21-23). Blain got one final kill before Penn evened the score with a win of its own (22-25).
Â
The home team took control early in the third and a 7-2 Quaker streak gave them a 17-11 advantage. Dartmouth and Penn traded points back-and-forth, but the Green weren't able to get closer than five points behind. Liddle added one more kill before the Quakers ended it (17-25).
Â
It was obvious early on that Dartmouth was the stronger team after starting the fourth on an 8-2 run following kills by
Emma Moffet, Liddle and Meldrum and an ace by
Taite Ryan. Penn had a 3-0 run late in the set, but it was a little too late (19-12). Kills by Liddle and Blain got the Big Green close, while a block assist by Meldrum and Blain sent the match to the fifth (25-16).
Â
Dartmouth jumped out to a 6-1 lead from three Penn errors, aces by Arent and Blain and kills by Ryan and Meldrum. The Quakers had an 8-3 rally to tie things up at 9-all. A Blain kill and an ace by
Bella Hedley put the Green up by two, but a four-point run switched the advantage to Penn (11-13). Blain and Meldrum got Dartmouth within striking distance, but the Quakers got to victory first (13-15).
Â
The Big Green will take on Brown and Yale on the road next weekend.
