Dartmouthsports.com will be recognizing the senior student-athletes who had their spring seasons canceled or severely shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today's Senior … Jonah Jenkins, right-handed pitcher on the baseball team.
DartmouthSports.com: What is your most memorable on-field team moment?
Jonah Jenkins: My most memorable on-field team moment was watching Dustin Shirley hit a walk-off nuke my freshman year. It ended up becoming a great taste of just how fun collegiate baseball is.
DS.com: And your most memorable on-field individual moment?
JJ: My most memorable on-field individual moment was my second appearance of my college career against Saint Joseph's, in which I went five scoreless innings and allowed only one hit. This provided the confidence for the rest of my college career to reinstate that I deserved to pitch here at this level.
DS.com: Baseball players are known for nicknames. What is yours on the team and how did you get it?
JJ: J.J. is my nickname from Coach Whalen, but I often just go by Jonah from everybody else. I always did kind of like J.J. though.
DS.com: Any hidden talents that you could share?
JJ: I am great at just about every video game that I play. I am actually on the Dartmouth Collegiate Rocket League team. I had to find a way to get in some kind of competition this spring.
DS.com: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
JJ: I would swap with James House … I want to know what goes through that guy's head. He's an absolute space cadet.
DS.com: What is your favorite place on campus?
JJ: My favorite place on campus is two places for two different reasons, one individually and one team related. Individually, my favorite place is the mound of Red Rolfe at Biondi Park, baby! It is always good to feel in control and on that mound I always have. My team-related place on campus would be Chi Heorot. It is always a good time to hang out with the team outside of baseball, and this place is where everybody congregates.
DS.com: What are your plans after Dartmouth?
JJ: My plan for after Dartmouth revolves around playing another two years of baseball at a graduate program. I have recently committed and was accepted into the University of San Francisco, so that is where I will be the next two years studying in their applied economics graduate program and playing my years of baseball that were taken away from me here.
Superlatives
Fastest runner on the team: Anyone but me, definitely not Ubaldo Lopez (he likes to think he's a speed demon all of a sudden).
Best overall fielder: I feel like Connor Bertsch has good actions in the field. Unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to have him behind me all that much.
Best eye at the plate: Probably Trevor Johnson. I usually don't get him to chase anything out of the zone.
Best hitter for contact: Ubaldo Lopez. His swing path stays in the zone for so long and just barrels balls. He absolutely smoked a ball off my shoulder in the tunnel in Leverone. Struck him out four pitches later, though.
Best hitter for power: Ben Rice. Ball comes off his bat differently than most.
Best throwing arm (position player): Not sure, but I once saw Bryce Daniel throw and hit the right field net above the wall from the left field line, so that was impressive from a position player.
Most accurate throwing arm: Logan Adams to second base. Never has made a throwing error in our scrimmages.
Best fastball: Based on numbers I am going with myself.
Best breaking ball: My curveball.
Best changeup: Max Hunter's changeup is so deceptive.
Best control: Justin Murray
Best flip player: Max Hunter before his flip career was ended by me …
Strongest teammate: Logan Adams
Funniest teammate: Oliver Campbell has some of the craziest and ridiculous quirks about him (must be a Delaware thing), that make him so funny to me. This guy absolutely lives in the jar.
Most outgoing: Cole Roland, this kid is energetic everywhere and anywhere.
Best dresser: Kolton Freeman, I am always stoked to see what he is going to wear to the locker room before practice.
Best player to spend time in the bullpen with: Max Hunter, a mixture of Jokes and seriousness was always a blast.
Best impression of Coach Whalen: Tyler Fagler, no questions asked. Of course I have never participated in this.
