SARASOTA, Fla. – The Big Green lightweight rowing team's season may have been shortened this spring due to COVID-19, but four members of the team continued racing as part of the United States Rowing Trials. On Tuesday, that crew managed to qualify for the World Rowing U23 Championships.
"Throughout the craziness of the past year and a half, a constant has been the determination of these rowers to train with the goal of competing at the U23 Worlds," Dartmouth lightweight rowing head coach
Dan Roock said. "All four were in Hanover for the spring term and were able to row as a crew in May for the first time. The boat showed real promise right from the start. I am delighted that they will be able to race for the USA at the U23 Worlds."
Rowing for Evergreen Rowing Camp in the lightweight quad event, the four-man crew of
Jack Stone '23,
Cooper Tuckerman '22,
Chris Stich '23 and
Sean Ward '21 beat out Sarasota Crew (6:04.60) in the final by less than two seconds in 6:02.93. The quartet last competed in the heavyweight division of the IRA championship, finishing fourth.
More than 140 athletes will be racing this week at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida, for a chance to represent the U.S. later this year in three events, the World Rowing U23 Championships, World Rowing Junior Championships and World Rowing Beach Sprints Finals.
The U23 Worlds will be held in Racice, Czech Republic on July 7-11.
