WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Dartmouth women's rugby team handed Army West Point its first loss of the season on Sunday, defeating the Black Knights by a score of 34-28. The Big Green remain undefeated at 3-0.
Lilly Durbin and
Emily Henrich both scored two tries to lead the team with 10 points, while
Abbey Savin had two good kicks for four points.
"In the words of one of our captains Emily [Henrich], the first half of today's game was electric," head coach
Katie Dowty said. "That's some of the best rugby we've ever played. In the second half, Army managed to wrestle the majority of possessions from us and fight their way back into the game. They are always a fit team that will challenge you for a full 80. Overall, it was a great contest. I was glad to see the team pull out a tough win and there were some great lessons that will serve us well moving forward."
Durbin got Dartmouth on the board just two minutes in and, after a try by
Kristin Bitter and Savin's first conversion, the Big Green already had a 12-0 advantage six minutes into the game. It took until the 23-minute mark, but Durbin was back, and one more good kick by Savin made it a 19-0 game. Neither team was able to get through and the score remained the same heading to halftime.
Returning to the pitch for the second half,
Nicole Ihensekhien and Henrich scored a try apiece to bring Dartmouth's lead to 29-0. With the visitors comfortably ahead, this was when the Black Knights turned it up. They waited until the 54
th minute to score their first try but 13 minutes, two more tries and three conversions later, Army was close behind (29-21).
With plenty of time remaining on the clock and a very close game on their hands, Dartmouth had some work to do. It took seven minutes, but Henrich was able to get through the Black Knight defense and score her second try of the afternoon, giving the Green breathing room (34-21). At 79:23, Army got one more try and conversion, but ran out of time before it could take the lead (34-28).
The Big Green will be at Brophy Field for three matches in a row, starting with Sacred Heart on Saturday, Oct. 2.
