HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth men's lacrosse dropped its season opener to Merrimack, 8-6, at Scully-Fahey Field on a snowy Saturday afternoon.
Â
In his first collegiate game,
Colin McGill had one goal and one assist to lead the team with two points. Six other players had one point apiece. In net,
Daniel Hincks played all 60 minutes, ending up with 16 saves while being saddled with the loss.
Â
The Big Green had a 27-24 advantage in shots on goal and had more ground balls with 26 to the Warriors' 24.
Â
Dartmouth (0-1) vs. Merrimack (1-2)
It took almost 12 minutes of scoreless play before Merrimack got on the board with 3:10 remaining in the opening quarter with what turned out to be the only goal of the first. Shots on goal were 9-5 in Dartmouth's advantage but all of those were saved by Henry Vogt.
Â
With a man advantage five minutes into the second, the Warriors were back at it. Jack Rooney fired over Hincks' right shoulder to score his second of the afternoon and make it 2-0. With 24.7 seconds remaining in the half, McGill was finally able to outsmart the goalie, cutting the visitors' lead in half (2-1).
Â
The third quarter was very eventful.
Matt Paul tied the score with 8:05 to go, only to have Merrick move ahead once again 60 seconds later. Another minute later, Rooney completed his hat trick to pull ahead by two, but
Tommy Rogan responded to that one just eight second later. With the Green trailing by one,
Henry Bonnie made it two in a row for Dartmouth when he scored as time was expiring to knot the game at four heading to the fourth quarter.
Â
Another six goals were scored in the final 15 minutes. Two Warrior goals scored in the first eight minutes put the visitors up by two, but
Nate Davis' tally 42 seconds later got the Big Green back in contention. That unfortunately didn't last, as two more for Merrimack made it an 8-5 game with five minutes remaining.
Foster Burnley scored his first of the season with 2:50 to go and, although the Green had a few more shots, that was the last to get past Vogt (8-6).
Â
The Big Green will be on the road next Saturday for a 12 p.m. game against Bryant.
