BEIJING — The 2022 Winter Olympics keeps rolling along, and three Dartmouth athletes were back in action today with some impressive results in their respective sports.
On the cross country skiing trails, Rosie Brennan '11 was terrific throughout the women's sprint free races today. After advancing through the preliminaries to the quarterfinals, she finished second in her heat to move on to the semifinals, where she placed fourth in her heat. While the top two in the two heats advance to the finals, the two next-best times do as well, sending her to the finals as well. Brennan then narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth behind teammate Jesse Diggins while two skiers from Sweden took the gold and silver.
Julia Kern '19 also made it out of the preliminaries into the sprint free quarterfinals, placing fourth in her heat. Unfortunately, her time did not allow her to move onto the semifinals.
The two skiers will be back in action on Thursday for the women's 10K classic, which will begin at 2 a.m. (EST).
In what could have been a precursor to the gold medal game in women's hockey, Laura Stacey '16 and her Canadian teammates defeated the United States, 4-2, to wrap up the preliminaries. In the middle of the second period, the U.S. scored two quick goals to take a 2-1 lead, but the Canadians tied the score 26 seconds later and reclaimed the lead after another 2:25. Stacey was on the ice for 10 shifts and a total of four minutes, 53 seconds.
The women's hockey quarterfinals are up next, beginning on Friday with the Stacey and her squad paired up with Sweden at 8:10 a.m. on Feb. 11.
Another upcoming event that will feature a Dartmouth athlete is the women's slalom with A.J. Hurt '23. The first run will start this evening at 9:15 p.m. EST. Hurt replaces Nina O'Brien '20, who will be unable to compete after
undergoing surgery to repair her fractured leg suffered just before the end her second run in the giant slalom on Sunday.
