BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. —
Kolton Freeman hit two of Dartmouth's four solo home runs on Sunday, but Gardner-Webb rode a six-run first to a 12-5 victory to earn a split of the four-game series on Sunday afternoon at John Henry Moss Stadium. Bo Rusher led the 15-hit attack for the Bulldogs (4-9) by going a perfect 4-for-4, while junior
Connor Bertsch was 3-for-3 for the Big Green (3-4).
Gardner-Webb had a 7-0 lead through three innings before the Big Green bats came to life in the fourth. The first run crossed the plate without the aid of a hit as sophomore
Tyler Cox walked, took second on a wild pitch, then came around to score on a pair of infield outs. Freeman followed by crushing his first four-bagger of the season out to left-center.
Sophomore
Tyler Robinson launched his first career home run to dead center with one out in the fifth, but Gardner-Webb wiped out all of the Big Green's progress toward the deficit in the bottom half when Nick Capozzi hammered a three-run homer to left-center, making it a 10-3 game.
Freeman and Bertsch went back-to-back with solo long balls, giving the latter a team-leading three homers on the young season.
But Gardner-Webb got those two runs back in the eighth on a two-out, bases-loaded single off the bat of Benino Mendella, concluding the scoring.
As it turned out, the Bulldogs got all the runs they needed in the first when they roughed up sophomore
Tyler Cortland (0-1) making his first collegiate start. A double, stolen base and wild pitch gave Gardner-Webb quick 1-0 lead, then six of the next seven hitters rapped out singles. Capozzi brought home the sixth run of the frame with a grounder to short. Rusher added a two-out, RBI double in the second give the hosts a 7-0 lead.
Connor Gleason (1-1) was credited the victory with one inning of relief despite giving up the back-to-back jacks in the sixth. He entered the game with one out in the fifth, spelling Casey Young who had surrendered three runs on three hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. Michael Portella and Kyle Skidmore combined to shut out the Big Green over the final 3.2 stanzas.
Cortland (0-1) settled down after his laborious first, finishing three frames while yielding seven runs on nine hits while striking out two.
Everyone in the Bulldogs' starting lineup had at least one hit led by Rusher's four knocks while Capozzi drove in four runs.
Dartmouth racked up 13 hits, and both Bertsch and Cox reached base four times.
The Big Green will not play again until March 16, after winter exams, when they travel to Florida for the Russ-Matt Invitational. The first opponent on the docket will be 2021 NCAA Regional participant Fairfield (3-6) at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale at 1 p.m.
